If Ovi's production falls off a cliff next year, how will the Caps handle it then?

What term and cap hit will Ovi sign for? I have a few conservative assumptions set up and they are as follows:
1. 83.5 million cap next year
2. BMac will be sentimental as he promised
16.82% of roughly a 57 million cap (when he signed in ’08) equals his current 9.58 cap hit BUT at an 83.5 million upper limit, Ovi in this scenario would make 14 per, no way that happens though.

Its all a term question I think. If he signs 3 years or less i think it'll be around 11-12 per. If more than that, I think it could be 10 or less per.

I don't think there's been a notion that Ovi was as criminally underpaid for the duration of his contract like Backstrom was. I think it'll come down to Ovi either wanting a competitive contract (10Mish), or a slight discount to make sure we can keep the core around him strong. We do have to pay Vrana and Samsonov the same off-season, after all.

My guess is he'll get 4 years, to match with Backstrom's 5, so they retire the same year. The AAV I would guess would be between 9.2-10 million. He was paid well throughout his career already, and won't look to gouge the Caps of money (not saying Backy did). He'd want the Caps to stay competitive in his twilight years, and knows in order to do that, he can't be eating up a huge amount of the cap. It'll be a slight hometown discount, I'd suspect, especially if he gets the term he wants.
