Intriguing and pretty much on the spot. Mayfield is No.4 D being somewhere in the middle of that pool quality-wise ( not to mention his AAV ) and as much as i would hate losing Hyman, i would say yes.

Would try to argue why Schmaltz / 3rd is there, but isnt really of any big significance in terms of losing either and i usualy overpay anyway.....i think 3rd should go other way...

I think the chance of being hit by lightening twice on the same golf round is equal to the chance that the Leafs would be willing to trade Hyman in this trade.

You can’t just murder someone out in broad daylight like that.

The third represents convincing Lou to budge. Schmaltz would become the 7th D or the AHL top 2 to whoever they call up (if its Seb Aho).

The Isles consider themselves contenders. Is trading a top 6 Dman wise, if you plan on playing in June?

it is when your team can't score. They need another top 9 forward. Also they are scratching Dobson some games. The replacement is already there.

I’m sure they would rather have Johnsson. I like mayfield but leafs have enough cap space for a real number 1 rhd next season. Mayfield is basically another Holl. I wouldn’t hate obtaining mayfield but unless he can handle top pair minutes or you think Lilly won’t be ready to go I think this trade just doesn’t fit.

ehh mayfield is better than Holl. He wouldn't be a top pair guy unless it is to balance the lines or in injury. They can still afford to sign somebody else due to the small AAV.

Barrie - UFA Signing
Sandin - Mayfield
Dermott - Holl

Lilly? I mean Holl is perfectly competent to play 2nd pair, and is a good shutdown guy against top lines. Yeah mayfield is a bit better but along the same line as Holl. I think Holl has a bit more room for improvement as well. You lose out on about 700k by adding mayfield and diminish assets to move in a trade for a number 1rhd. Who is this mystery ufa?

i dont think you want to risk having no other options and having two rookies in at once. Sandin (though quite likely proven by next year) still isn't a guarantee he will be. Moreso for Liljegren. I think he is best with an additional AHL year. A playoff team wants the best possible in the given circumstance, not the easiest to obtain.

Yup... the best possible option is a real 1rhd that can play big minutes. Not worrying about who’s going to be bottom pair. Marincin vet D on a minimum.

Lilly needs to **** or get off the pot. I think he is ready. Just needs some confidence.

he gotta drug history? yikes... we all know how that went (caugh mike richards caugh)

if Barries stock has decreased at all maybe u can get him around 7M. Otherwise Tanev, Schultz or Hamonic probably available in the 4.5-5.5M range

I have gone on record numerous times on CAPFRIENDLY to say that Sandin was the best defenceman not playing in the NHL prior to his call up to the Leafs. He was just killing the AHL and playing 25 minutes a night and was named top defenceman in recent World Junior tournament. He is a top pair defenceman who is going to transistion seamlessly to the NHL with the Leafs and be a major contributor immediately like Petterson on the Canucks. He is actually going to save the Leafs season by stepping up big time to help Leafs absorb injuries to Rielly and Muzzen. There is no chance that the Sanman is going back to the Marlies as Leafs need to get him NHL and playoff ready over the rest of the season. He is the best Leafs defenceman prospect in the last 25 years and actually best since Borge Salming.

i don't think he will surpass Rielly. But definitely #2. I agree with you in saying he is impactful. Where I say next year is I don't want him to become like the Isles dobson who is just sitting there waiting to be used. Let Sandin start next season.
It's Tim Lil that I dont think will be ready

I think that the Sandman is actually starting for the rest of this season with the Leafs as he is just too good to send back to the AHL. Sheldon Keefe knows how good he really is and he is not going to be afraid to play him in all situations including PP and PK for the rest of the season. There is something about Sandin that make him a very, very special hockey player and its his IQ and antipation and how he thinks the game and is always one step ahead of most other players. Petterson on the Canucks has this same special quality which is almost Gretzky like.

I agree that Liljegren is behind the Sandman and will probably finish season with Marlies however think he will make the Leafs next year.
