If Toronto are selling off at the deadline, why would Carolina give the pick back?

Totally agree on that. And barrie is terrible defenseman, he got some offensive instinct but he can’t defend ****.

Why Pittsburgh would do that trade? They already have a pretty good blueline, With all the injured players coming back they don’t need help at this position. They need some forward, winger to be more precise.

Because kapanen is worth a minimum of a high second and Barrie beside Slavin would make a damn good pair, it's pretty simple to see why the first would be included

Yeah you are right, forgot to look at the LTIR.

In the other and Pittsburgh could use a kapanen or johnsson. Pittsburgh have some pretty good you g defenseman that could help toronto.

I'm not saying it wouldn't, but Carolina don't have the cap for Kapanen and Barrie, and the pick woud have more value..... why would Carolina move it back?

I'm pretty sure they have the space once Hamilton is on LTIR and how would the pick hold more value over two impact players (one with term) on a team trying to go deep again?

Its probably cause many on here undervalue Kapanen.

Carolina currently sit outside of a playoff spot, they have no ambitions to go deep right now. The pick at 11th overall holds more value than any player right now they could get for it, maybe barring a goaltender.

Too many trades for a team that doesn't need a lot of moves made for the future. Toronto isn't far off from having a Cup contender, so the only contracts they're going to try to unload if a playoff spot is too far out of reach is expiring contracts like Muzzin, Barrie, and Spezza (if they don't want to work out an extension on any of them). Players like Kapanen or Johnsson would be best moved at the draft when teams have the most roster flexibility and are working to put together their roster for the next year. Waiting until the draft also gives them more time to evaluate guys like Sandin or Liljegren to see if maybe they can be top 4 guys next year.

If you prefer the Leafs would take Carolinas 1st instead of their own in the deal - but if that Leafs 1st ends up top 10 ( with what's left of the Leafs Blueline pretty much ensures it will be) the Leafs get that pick back anyway and Carolina ends up with the Leafs 2021 1st while the Leafs end up with both Carolina's 1st and their own 1st in 2020

That canes trade is pretty awful for the Leafs - basically trade away 2 Quality assets for their own 1st. Poor asset management

Toronto would have to outtank teams. If they end up with the 11th OA pick (which with their forward core, it very well may be) Carolina get playoffs and a great pick. This isn't worth it

Like I said I'd gladly take Carolinas 1st instead of TOs

If Toronto's is 11th OA, then they get Kapanen, 2 months of Barrie and an improved pick for 6.25 mil.....

Basically yes, that's if they have no interest in signing Barrie in the offseason, which they may or may not have.
