I think you got this wrong, he wasn't a Ranger captain. Although.... Kreider is a ranger so it fits that narrative

I think this trade is about what it would take. Tampa hasn't been known to trade 1st rd picks for straight rentals in the past, but maybe this is the year things change.

They can afford to do it too, because they have another 1st round pick in their arsenal (Vancouver)

Yes, this wouldn't be a bad year to do it, although it is a deep draft and it is still not certain they'll get Vancouver's 1st this year or next year. It definitely gives Tampa a bigger and grittier F for the top 6 wing, which they could use for the playoffs, as well as allowing for a deeper top 9 as well. There are a few other guys that they might target as more of a 3rd line wing that will cost less, so I guess JBB will have to decide which route is best. This assumes he does anything at the tdl, which I hope he does as standing pat would be a mistake imo.
