Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 19, 2020
Published: Jan. 20, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Leafs miss the playoffs this season which is extremely likely, then I think they will really kick tires at signing an elite defenseman like Alex Pietrangelo. However they will need cap space so I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade one of their 4 top forwards. Most likely Marner since he is both overpaid and incapable of playing center.

Additional Details:
This is a gross overpay by Pittsburgh. However looking at what is being given up for guys like Zucker and Saad, I have to think Marner is worth a bit more. If Jim Rutherford were to make a deal for a top winger, expect him to pay less.

Be honest, you think Leafs can Murray on top what they are paying Andersen?

You don’t like the overpayment for Marner? Well me neither but luckily I’m not the wizard that is Jim Rutherford.

How is a A- prospect, a half decent goalie and two late first round picks an over pay for a 90 point winger? Marner would instantly become Pitts 3rd best player

To be honest, if Pittsburgh had this team they would be unstoppable.

Well, if the Leafs trade Marner, plus let all their free agents walk they’ll probably have more than 20 million in cap space. They can use that to sign Pietrangelo, Murray and maybe even Muzzin.

How about Penguins keep their guys and picks... and Leafs keep Marner.

Murray as long as he’s confident is a really good starting goaltender so he should be able to fetch a 1st Round pick as well. So the value would be 4 1st round picks for Marner. That is a lot.

Leafs will have a better chance at winning the cup if they invest Marner’s cap space on defence and goaltending.

Thats an underpayment if anything. A bottom 5 goalie this season, two late firsts, and a player teetering on bust territory for Marner lol

Murray had a real tough start to the season, but he’s getting it together now and if he keeps it up, he’ll have good value at the end of the season. He’s a proven starter with 2 cups. Some people are not high on Joseph since he hasn’t made an impact right away but he’s only 20. A solid skater with good defensive awareness could allow him to become a solid shutdown defenseman in the future. Honestly, this is as big of a package as what Devils got for Hall. Marner’s no Hall.

Marner has term hall was a UFA. Mitch is also only 22...hall is 28 and is the worse player of the two besides Hall's Hart season. Leafs would never accept this. Marner has Kane level value to their team which the Pens dont have the assets to get.

POJ is 6'3 yet has less muscle mass than most guys who are 5'10 he hasnt filled out his frame at all hence why he hasnt come close to making the league yet.
