How do the Canucks create some cap space

Description
Post your ideas for shedding some cap!

Obviously there is a group of untouchables that wont be moved; Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat, Hughes, Edler, Miller, Gaudette, Virtanen, Tanev and Myers/Ferland with NTC until after the expansion draft.

So what depth moves can they make to free up cap space? Louie Erikssons 6M, Brandon Sutters 4M and Sven Baertschi's 3M are the obvious ones the Canucks would like to move first but they would probably need to give something up to do so or take equal money back.

The next most likely candidates are Troy Stecher and Tim Schaller in my eyes. These are the two players I would like to see the Canucks try to sell this season. Schaller is a solid 4th line depth character guy who kills penaltys and brings a hard nosed game. Would be a good cheap depth addition for a playoff push or cause of injury. Troy Stecher is coming into his own and is what I would call a 4/5th Defenseman and can run a 2nd PP unit or kill penaltys. He is small but makes up for it with good positioning and his quick puck transition game.

We arent resigning Schaller so may as well try to sell him even if its for virtually nothing other than shedding some cap.

Stecher has arbitration rights and will likely be awarded a salary in the 4M range which the Canucks cant afford right now with all the contracts they will need to resign in the offseason; Markstrom, Tanev, Virtanen, Gaudette and possibly Leivo or Motte. Luongos recapture and Spooners buyout would be nice to replace with Stechers contract. We also have two solid young defenseman coming in Rafferty (RHD) who leads the AHL in points by a Dman and Olli Juolevi (LHD) who has been hitting full stride of late with 12 points in as many games. I believe these guys may spend the whole season in the AHL playing big minutes barring injury though. Jordie Benn has also got experience on the Right Side and could fill that hole on the third pair while calling up one of Sautner or Brisebois.

Canucks need cap space to avoid a bonus overage in the following year or two. They can defer the penalty by one season, but are going to need all our cap space in Petey and Huggys contract years.

Stechers value is up for debate but Id say if a team came calling Vancouvers price would be a second, but if they are selling it downgrades to a third.

Schaller is worth a 7th id say. Got a 6th from Boston to show them... Ha!

Think you are just giving away Stecher for nothing. Would not trade him as he is from Vancouver and great young player with a heart of gold.

I don't think anything really needs to be done until the offseason. From there the best way to clear cap space would probably be to offload Baertschi and Sutter. Montreal was rumoured to have interest in Baertschi, so maybe something could be worked out there when he only has a year left on his deal. Sutter is a tougher move, but we could probably retain some salary to move him. We wouldn't get anything back and would likely have to downgrade some picks for sure.

I don't want to move Stetcher, but he looks like the odd man out. There were rumblings at the start of the year that management was already gauging Stetcher's value around the league. He's from Vancouver, plays tough, gives it 110% and is a great guy, but he might just have to be cut loose. I really liked the idea of targeting Kapanen in a Stetcher trade, but if a deal can't be made there then we would probably just take straight picks back (a 2nd and a mid/late pick).

I think it's a foregone conclusion that the bonuses will carry over to next year.

This may be wishful thinking, but I think Eriksson is gone after he gets his bonus in July. Despite the recent success, he’s not in their plans, doesn’t have much money coming to him, and his family is in Dallas. If the Canucks let him know that the rest of his career would be in Utica, I think they mutually agree to terminate the contract.
