"In professional sports, a franchise player is an athlete who is both the best player on their team and one that the team can build their "franchise" around for the foreseeable future."

this is why teachers are wary of wikipedia. the page you got that sentence from is nonsense and arguable.

Since we're just coping and pasting results from Google, I will indulge:

What is the meaning of the term Franchise Player when it comes to sports?

Franchise Player is a term mostly used in North America and it is attributed to a player who has plenty of skill and in addition possesses qualities around which a business can be built. He/she becomes the face of the sports team, which is important when it comes to signing endorsement deals, media dealings and sporting trade in general. The Franchise Player is not necessarily the best player on the team, but he/she surely is paid like one.

It's almost as if Tampa Bay still considers Stamkos the face of the team.

Good choice for SJ. I was afraid you’d pick Karlsson.

I'd go Svech in CAR, Gibby in ANA (Getz is just too old now) I would probably choose Meier for SJ as well

Usually franchise player just means ta playyer of a certain calibre a team can build around but is some cases, teams can have more than one franchise player so i don't know what the big fuss is about?? Some teams simply don't have franchise players. They just have really good players.
