I see Tor and Car being the most suitable trade partners for Vatanen. Carolina just losing Hamilton is a big loss and I wouldn't be surprised if we could persuade them to give up that spare 1st rounder this year so they can fill that hole. NJ could then flip one of the 3 first rounders. Tor also very much needs a Dman - however, they need a stay at home guy imo. Vat would make a nice fit but hes a playmaking D which they already have.

Not being biased, but I also agree the top 9 looks great in this post. As for the back end - I think NJ waits until UFA to address D. Smith is definitely making the team next year. And if NJ resigns Vat, that leaves Butch, Vat and Smith on the left. Sub, Sev and Carrick on the right. Where could NJ then fit a top 4 Dman? Would they slot Butcher in a 3rd pairing role? Without any signing or trade for D, here is how I would slot in everyone...

Vatanen - Subban
Smith - Severson
Butcher - Carrick/ someone we trade or sign?

Only problem is the D is horrible this year and addition by subtraction of Greene wont be enough IMO. The top 9 Fs I'm onboard with.

I am hoping our ability to take a contract or two off hands of teams looking to make PO moves. Having cap space too does not hurt here.
If they could add Kapanen from Tor this team woudl have some kickazz speed!
