New GM Scenario Year 1 of 2 Core Change

Created by: Billy739
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 21, 2020
Published: Jan. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NSH 6 points out of a Wildcard with 4 games in hand and with Granlund having bad year on pace for less then he had his rookie season and is in a similar position to Tatar after his trade to VGK

Tatar's value is certainly atleast worth what we landed for Pacioretty given we sold MP at a career low and we'll be selling Tatar his 2nd straight career year production wise .

Tatar to NSH for:
Granlunds UFA rights
Davies
2nd round pick in 2020

Petry to VAN for:
Bartschi
Benn (to make the cap work)
1st in 2021(given Van making the playoffs TBL will collect their 2020 1st)

Year 2 will be selling off Gallagher, Danault ,Chiarot ,and Byron . Making room for youth while leaving Kovy as a veteran leader along with Thompson to help the new forward core of Domi , Drouin ,Suzuki,Caufield and Kotkanemi to lead. Shea and Benn can stay to guide Mete , Romanov, Fleury Davies,Harris and eventually Brook .

Price and Primeau in a true tandem just has gold written all over it .
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Baertschi, Sven
  2. Benn, Jordie
  3. 2021 1st round pick (VAN)
2.
MTL
  1. Davies, Jeremy
  2. Granlund, Mikael
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
if NSH makes WCF with Tatar the pick becomes a 2020 2nd and if NSH wins the cup this year it becomes a 2020 1st .
NSH
  1. Tatar, Tomas ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
MTL retains 1.5m on Tatar's cap leaving NSH with a total savings of 2.45m leaving them enough cap for returning players and about 5m cap left to sign someone else .
3.
MTL
to any team for any pick
we paid nothing for either using career AHL players we got as throw ins in the plekanec deal and a ufa we signed so anything is a profit.
    4.
    MTL
    1. Caulfield, Judd [Reserve List]
    2. 2020 1st round pick (PIT)
    Additional Details:
MTL gains a 2020 1st and a NCAA Power Forward who plays a similar game to Armia . (not related to Cole just decent power forward prospect )

Retains 1.683m for 2 years in addition to giving up two 2nd's and possibly a converted 1st if the SB experiment fails .

MTL walks into the 2020 draft with two 1st this and next draft giving them lots of leverage to make moves for Lefreniere if so desired .It might take four 1sts in 2 years to do it but its now theoretically possible atleast .
    PIT
    1. Baertschi, Sven ($1,683,333 retained)
    2. 2020 2nd round pick (MTL)
    3. 2020 2nd round pick (CHI)
    Additional Details:
    Baertschi at 50% retained

Conditional 2nd becomes a 1st in 2021 if PIT doesnt make it to the 2nd round in the playoffs with Baertschi playing 50% games or more .
    5.
    MTL
    1. Foligno, Marcus
    Additional Details:
one of the only guys with success in fights vs Tom Wilson and if we're going to the playoffs having him around to get by WSH's spark plug will be a huge help the next 2 years .

He's no big minute player but he'll give you 12-14minutes a game with 175-200+ hits a year and although he's not a goon he will and can protect his teammates.
    MIN
    1. Vejdemo, Lukas
    2. 2020 3rd round pick (MTL)
    Additional Details:
conditional 3rd becomes a 2nd in 2021 if MTL makes ECF with Foligno playing 50% or more.

You are making the team worse and Bergevin won’t get fired forget about it, he’s doing a GREAT job

If you're using the Pacioretty trade as a frame of reference for trading Tatar:

Granlund (now) = Tatar (back then), but Tatart had an extra 2 years on his deal so it doesn't really work with Granlund as he's a UFA in a few months
    Davies ≠ Suzuki
    2nd rd pick = 2nd rd pick

So you need a better prospect than Davies in my opinion, and someone like Granlund, granted, but that player can't be a UFA only 20 or so games after acquiring him.

that's the definition of a rebuild which this whole post is about. . . .

this is like me running into a mcdonalds and going '' no your cooking meat , please stop ''

you have the right to join in or bugger off as with all things in life
you dont however get to lie and tell me now 6 first round busts is doing good . (Leblanc , Tinordi , Beaulieu, Scherbak, Juulsen and Mccarron )

Bergevin is the most incompetent GM in the entire NHL and needs to be replaced for the team to get on with the proper rebuild.

This is just false. Bergevin has a very good trade record and did a good job rebuilding as of now. He's sticking with the plan of getting younger, firing him wouldnt make sens.

Sure he has made some bad decision but it doesn't mean he's the worse. People tend to blame due to the signing of Price contract but his recent moves are starting to overshadow his past mistakes. Even that Subban trade is look good for Montreal right now even Subban helped the Preds reach the SCF.

I stopped drinking all the kool-aid made by Marc Bergevin because I realized it is making me and the fans of his team sick. Can not believe he still has his job.

That’s because you have zero hockey knowledge, it’s normal and it looks like you never will smile

w/r/t the Nashville trade - giving up Davies feels like a heck of a risk, but otherwise that seems more or less plausible. Assuming, of course, that the Preds haven't thrown in the towel by the deadline...
