Think you have to give the edge to Ottawa. Zaitsev has been a lot better than that pylon Ceci that leafs fans still like rubbing off but Connor Brown’s value is a like a 2nd and 3rd and they got a decent AHLer. Toronto gets a 1 year skating empty cardboard box, 2 nothing AHLers and a 3rd.

Leafs get cap space and a 3rd brown. I never thought zaitsev was all that bad. I think he is a bit better than ceci but that contract is bad. Ceci is ufa. I would still say leafs win this trade as they would have no need for zaitsev next year. Brown needed to be moved and deserved more ice time. He is a great player, everywhere on the ice. Glad to see him doing well.

I don't think there is a clear winner, maybe ott cuz of brown but zaits contract would have been an issue for the leafs going forward so its tough to determine a winner atm considering the 3rd pick and how zaits contract will play out.

Win for both team. They got what they wanted
Leafs got rid of Zaitsev's contract.
Ottawa got rid of Ceci, who was useless for them. Brown has been useful for their top 6. Zaitsev helps them reach the Cap Floor/Min and he's a good replacement for Ceci.

Sure the Leafs didn't like to lose Brown but he was cap casualty. As suggested by knowledgeable fans above, the Leafs got what they wanted long term cap space by trading Zaitsev. And Ceci hasn't been as bad as so many make out like he. Believe he has the low rate of goals against at even strength by any Leaf Dman

Totally agree with your comments. Brown was also sweetner added to deal to get Ottawa to bite and take on the Zaitzev long-term contract and a player who wanted out of Toronto and had actually told the world he wanted out which put Leafs in a weak position to deal him. This was a brilliant trade for Dubas and the Leafs and also scored them alot of goodwill with players and players agents throughout the entire NHL by moving Connor Brown to a team which he would get a real chance to play and establish himself which he was not going to get in Toronto. Dubas and the Leafs did the same goodwill deal last year when they moved Levo to the Canucks and if you believe in karma then the Leafs will be rewarded in the future.

Nice thought about "goodwill and karma".n. By moving the unhappy Zaitsev, maybe it showed other Russian UFAs..Leaf will respect your wants. If Brown had still being a Leaf maybe Mikheyvov and/or Engvall wouldn't have got their NHL opportunity.

All very astute comments and totally agree with you. I think it really did show other Russian UFA's and their agents that Dubas and Leafs really try to look after their players. I know Dubas and Leafs scored major goodwill when Dubas stayed with Mikheyev while in a hospital recovering from serious injury in road game and I know that Dan Milstein his agent was really impressed who is probably the most powerful agent for Russian hockey players in the NHL.

Also agree that the Brown trade opened the door for both Mikheyev and Engvall to make the Leafs and something that Babcock was actually hinting at the end of last year when he hinted that the Leafs had a couple of bigger forwards comming. I think the Leafs knew they had to add more size to their line-up after being eliminated by Boston again last year.

Ottawa. Having Zaitsev is going to be annoying in 3 years when Ottawa has Thomson and Bernard-Docker on the team, but getting to have Connor Brown makes it well worth it for Ottawa. Brown has been Ottawa's most consistent forward this season, and he's probably going to hit 50 points with a shot at 20 goals. He's going to be an important player for Ottawa for a long time. Probably going to wear a letter on his Jersey.

Sens can deal with the Zaitsev issue later, but for now he's a competant player.
