Why I think Ryan Suter could be traded if he waived

Team: 2019-20 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 22, 2020
Published: Jan. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Suter is currently 35. He just turned 35 actually. He'll be 40 at the end of his deal. While this IS an awful deal for MIN and any other team that could want him, I think the contract could be moved. Guerin could/should offer to retain 2 mil of Suter's deal until the 2 last seasons of his deal. 3 mil for the last 2 seasons. I other words, after this season, Suter would cost around 5,5 mil for 3 years, and 4,5 mil for two years.

I think there are teams looking to win this season that could want his contract. Winnipeg is a good example.

Suter is one of the more consistent d-men in the NHL and I think he still has 2 great seasons to give to any team.

What do you guys think?

He could be moved the same way Burns Vlasic Price or Doughty can be moved

I would tend to agree with most of your points. BUT, like you said Suter is such a consistent D, and still has so much game left in him, and still has an advantage for the wild to keep him. I think moving Brodin makes way more sense to me. Younger guy on a decent contract, with a lot of upside. Especially with the unexpected play of rookie Soucy, having Suter/Spurgeon Soucy/Dumba as your top 4 looks pretty darn good

However MIN's entering a rebuild and this may be their last chance to trade Suter...

I put Suter and Keith in the same "age doesn't really matter all that much" column. Sure he will eventually slow down, but he is still very valuable to a lot of teams. The issue really is the cap hit and, like you said, the WIld would need to retain some of that.
if Mini is entering a rebuild he is a nice piece to have on the back end

Parise is 35, Staal too, Koivu is 36, Zuuc is 32, Suter is 35, Spurgeon is 30, both goalies are in the 30s, he needs to trade 2 of them in the upcoming TDL IMO

All players have NMC or modified NMC....probably going to be tough to convince them to opt.

It all comes down to Suter's willingness to waive his NMC for the team that is willing to add him. That is literally the only real hurdle. One I think he has no intention of jumping over. He's home and in the back 9 of his career anyway.

If for some reason he was willing to go anywhere that would have him, the second hurdle would be finding a realistic return for him. Just like with Shea Weber and or Carey Price in MTL. These guys are still elite players but their contracts/age heavily impact their trade value. So don't expect a bunch of 1st round picks and former 1st rounder prospects in return. The biggest value Minny would receive will be in the form of cap/money saved. Then some picks and prospects.

Any trade for Suter is going to be probably be for picks, prospects and a major cap dump though. If Minny is ok with that and Suter is willing to go elsewhere, yeah a trade could be made. Heck I'd even be ok if MTL would try for it (assuming they are hell bent on trying to win now while Price and Weber are here)

Whats that got to do with anything? I don't think anyone doubts that a trade could be worked out. He's still a good player and looks like he will be for a while. Its that he has a NMC and perception that he doesn't want to go anywhere else. (No offense to Winnipeg but that isn't exactly a highly sought after destination either - Montreal is neither for that matter)

I think the retention has to be the same each year. But they can write up a list of how much it should be at each age, and then average it out somewhere around 2.5 or 3. That should make it a good contract this year, even if it still ends up bad at the end. That would allow Minnesota to still get good value for a player who's still pretty decent.
