Why sell Ekholm but buy Gustafsson, makes no sense.

Asset management, If you realistically think about Gustafsson is a cheap alternative effective cost per point player. While downgrading Ekholm to Contender CAR gaining a Top 4 Defense prospect with other assets and spending a 2nd to have a Solid 2nd pair LHD for this year & a above average 3rd Pair LHD for multiple years to come after Bean is ready to jump into the Top 4 for 2020-2021

While yes you can wait for Free Agency you then contend with teams that may be willing to overpay pricing yourself out of the Market. Instead of using a 2nd + 4th in order to secure the player now you may need to spend way more on Free Agency for the same player. Contending with teams like WPG,VGK, MTL & NYI you get to the point where Gustafsson either costs you 3-4m or does not sign with you at all.
