DUBAS HITS HOME RUN IN ACQUIRING MANSON

Created by: TMLSage
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2020
Published: Jan. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kyle Dubas has been working the phone lines hard lately and he finally puts a trade together to acquire Josh Manson as the right hand, stay at home and tough as nails defenceman that the Leafs have been looking for to play on the team's top pairing with Morgan Rielly. The Leafs would now have one of the better 1-6 defence cores in the entire NHL. Ryan Miller also agrees to the trade to try to win a cup in Toronto before retiring. The Ducks agree to the deal after Barrie confirms he will resign with them on a long-term contract. Interested in your thoughts about this trade and specifically if you think that Manson is the type of defenceman that the Leafs are really targetting to acquire between now and the trade deadline.

How dare you. Manson is worth Nylander, Matthews and every pick from 2021-2026, no?

(I like the trade. Maybe package them Ceci with another asset.

You still think he is worth more than Barrie if he would commit to a long-term contract with Ducks, Johnsson plus Bracco as a wildcard upside sweetner. Not saying your wrong as not really watching Manson and Ducks that closely this year but would be interested in what others think on this trade.

Was Manson ever as good as he was in that one season 2 years back? Or just struggling Dman now? Because I hear a lot that he is struggling.

I actually think Leafs really like how Ceci's defensive game is transforming under the coaching of Sheldon Keefe. Ceci is a former 1rst round draft pick who played on the first line defensive pairing against other teams best players on a terrible Ottawa team and was unfairly treated as one of the team's wipping boys. Fans need to wake up and realize he is actually a solid 4,5 or 6 defenceman for the Leafs.

Agree with you that he had a great season 2 years ago when the Ducks took out the Oilers in the playoffs. The real question is whether his struggling is caused by him or is it the result of the team struggling. I actually think the Ducks might be prepared to move him in a trade now because they know it is now time to rebuild the team.

Both most likely. And to get a Dman like Barrie who would be without any doubt top pairing option for them would be very nice. Actually I would love to see Lindholm - Barrie pairing. That would be beastical.

He's a #6 defenceman, no better. If he made 2 million no one would have a problem

The best part will be when Toronto resigns him in the offseason and all of leafs twitter/reddit loses their "shirt".

Not sure about this trade, a lot of assets to give up on a guy who may not be the big upgrade we are hoping. I would Toronto would want to deal more in futures then trading pieces off of their roster. That being said, if a dman is being sent out, I bet it's Barrie not Ceci (he's probably worth more).

No one is being sent out. All this panicked emotions and emotions is based of speculation from the media. This speculation is specifically designed to feed these emotions to drive more clicks to their website. Its why I can't trust the Athletic at all, they need to dive subscriptions so their reporting is meant to create that emotional response so people can justify spending the money it costs to see their stuff. The other media is following that trend and now speculation and hot takes is everything. And you won't get more fan reaction than posting hot takes on the Leafs. For example, Dreger saying a backup would cost more than Kapanen. Its all stupid.

Don't know if Manson is this difference maker so many Leaf fans think he is. But from a realistic view, the Ducks are out of the playoffs, so the going into next year the trade is Johnsson for Manson. Ducks decline.

I will say Manson this year is not the same Manson from seasons ago, but I do think his value isn't that far off, he's had some struggles but I do think they are overstated somewhat. He's had some injuries and the quality of the team around him has diminished.

Us Ducks fans (Myself included) have had a tendency to say it would take alot to move Manson. I still believe that but the days of saying it would be something like Lily + are ridiculous imo

I still think the ducks don't move him unless a good young RD (Not necessarily Lily, just in general) is coming back, maybe a one for one or a small add on either side but the Ducks need RD insanely bad, and that just amplifies if Manson gets moved out

I like this because you’re not trying to shove Ceci in our face. However the only problem is that I don’t see Miller waiving his NTC. If he did I’d be all for this. Finally a good leafs trade lol

I've seen several of these Manson-Miller package proposals recently, and none of the accompanying offers seem worthwhile to me.

What you've got here is a (good) backup goalie and a defensive defenseman for another type of defenseman and some additional pieces. In this instance, the additional pieces are of almost no value to Anaheim at all.

Andreas Johnsson is a nice, quality, NHL forward, but in my opinion Max Comtois and Max Jones have a much greater upside and are younger and cheaper.

The Ducks aren't interested in the incendiary Michael Hutchinson because they have Andrew Stolarz ready to come up from San Diego and Lukas Dostal in the wings.

Anaheim similarly has no interest in Jeremy Bracco because the prospect rating service to which I default opines that Daniel Sprong and Kiefer Sherwood are likely better.

So regardless of your opinion of Barrie vis-à-vis Manson, this trade makes no sense for Anaheim. The only variation I see working for the Ducks is an extended Barrie and the 2020 second, but that renders an already bare draft cupboard even emptier.
