I don't think they have roster spot for him.
With williams return to the team their top 9 is really good.

    Teravainen - Aho - Svechnikov
    Dzingel - Staal - Necas
    Niederreiter - Haula - Williams
    Foegele - Wallmark - McGinn / Martinook

Probably he can take Staal spot, but i think think they want to do this move for a 1st. If they can have a really good top 6 F at the TDL they will make a move. Strome has a good season but he play with Panarin...

I really do not understand the Strome hate. He plays great with Panarin and their is clearly some chemistry there.

    Why break it up?

Feedback for you is very similar to what is mentioned above by @clapperzzz11 ...

Canes forward group is crowded and we are healthy scratching a solid forward every game now that Williams is back. Depth is a good thing, but if we give up a first, it’d better be for someone who easily slots into the top 6. I’m not sure Strome does this easily, but he is a right shot center which would be attractive.

So my thought is if Strome was a guy we’d be after, we’d need to move out a forward and we wouldn’t be offering a first. So, my guess is it doesn’t happen. Keep in mind that the Canes AHL team has about 4-5 forward options we can call up in case of emergency.

I just don't think we're a good fit based off of what @Caniac555 and @clapperzzz11 mentioned.
A first could be used for a more high caliber player for a potential playoff run.

FWIW Strome had a really good season even before Panarin came to New York

Cap. Next three years: 8m over, even, 24m over (ish...depending on many decisions). Any cheaper player could have chemistry with Panarin. Turn him into a prospect
