I know Markstrom had been our MVP, but I'm not sure I'd re-sign him to that deal. Cap space is going to be a big concern for us moving forward. I don't think Demko is ready to be a full time starter but I don't think re-signing someone to a significant cap hit for 6 years is the best way to go.

The Canucks are also looking at either 1.5 or 3.5 in bonus overages for next season that have to be accounted for. They should also try to maintain about 4 million in cap space for the whole year to prevent bonuses from carrying over to the next year when Pettersson and Hughes need new contracts. We're going to need every dime of cap space we can find at that time.

EDIT: I can get behind pretty much everything else you've done though. I would also try and move Sutter to create that cap space I talked about. I'm also assuming you moved Stetcher for picks.

I hear you on the Markstrom contract. The trouble is I don't believe you get in for less, hes been great not only this year but for a good 3/4 of last year as well. Demko hasn't proven enough yet which is why you sign Markstrom to by some time to evaluate which of the 2 you move (while also track Dip in Utica to see his progression).

Ideally you move Sutter (who I like when hes in the lineup) next year at some point and it makes life much easier but my question is: what do you think those 2 command in 2021- 16mil? 17 mil? 18mil? Higher (salary cap dependent).

They were talking about goalie signings at the age of 30 for big contracts today on the radio. They were saying at 30 when goalies sign the big contracts, why do teams do it. It ends up screwing the team and at 30 when they are asking for a good contract, maybe the teams should trade him for really good value. Just food for thought.

I guess the trouble would be that, you're not getting rid of him this year so:

he either signs a contract that works for him and maybe that is less that then above but I think now would be his time to cash in
or he goes UFA and you say "yeah he was good but we didn't want to risk signing him for future problems". A now you go for a goalie position on lock down to 2 unproven goalies. \

I think you're stuck and have to sign him.

There is some time between the season and UFA. But yes it is a delimma and Markstrom is a hell of a goalie, to bad he didnt have just 1 more year on his contract. But I am sure somehow the canucks will screw things up with their goaltending again

If the Nucks opt to sign Markstrom long-term, do you think they would be interested in this deal too? https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1587627
