It was more Tatars value that got hat return. Vegas seems to value things a little bit differently if people haven't noticed. They want to win now and have given up the significant resources they were given to get that. Even the Gallant firing shows their impatience with everything.

Because they HAD to trade Kessel. That's the difference. Not to mention that Kessel is a special type of person that a lot of teams don't exactly like.

Plus VGS misjudged Tatar's value, hard. They literally paid a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd just months previous and then added him to a trade as a cap dump.... its didn't make sense and frankly was a really bad mistake on their part. One a GM should not be allowed to make.

That and Kessel was clearly on the decline. Add in the fact that PIT had to pay more to get out of cap trouble and it makes sense.

Tatar didn't mesh with their play style, and Knights were desperate to do amazing again (for whatever reason, maybe to grow the fanbase faster). They treated Tatar like a cap dump in the Pacioretty trade. Pacioretty is also not a one trick pony, he is a great defensive winger and made Desharnais look like a NHLer for YEARS!!!!

Tomas Tatar didn't have much value due to his performance in Vegas

I mean pens were never really in cap trouble. They had flexibility pre tanev signing. Also kessel has 82 points last year. Very solid. This year he hit the wall but he was good last season

The main reason why pens didn’t get fair value for kessel was due to him stacking his 10 team trade clause with division rivals, and then Arizona. Pens would never trade kessel To philly or Washington for example, so Arizona was really the only team.

It just sucks we don’t have much to show for kessel. Other than two cups haha

Less to do with his points than his underlying. Points are virtually useless in assessing a player. They can sometimes point in the right direction, but it isn't the entire story to the point that you are better off leaving them mostly out of the equation.
For Kessel, his underlyings were saying he was being propped up by an offensive juggernaut of a team.

Killorn is next years Kessel for what it is worth.

That didn't help either. Lets assume one of their rivals gave a better offer though, would you not make that trade? I would. Its not like you were trading him because he sucked. You were trading him because it was either him or Malkin because of their relationship souring, no? Might as well get full value from one of your rivals than settling for a lesser value trade. IMO

I agree, but clearly Rutherford didn’t. Plus a lot of teams that were on his trade list couldn’t afford him (ie Washington)

The Wild had a better offer (Zucker+) IIRC. Kessel killed the deal with his NTC.
