Additional Details:

I doubt Kreider re-signs in Van. I've heard he does not want to be in Canada, and Van is tight on cap space anyways. This is just a trade to make a playoff run.
Van is currently 1st in their division, so this is as good a time as any to try and make a push.

Additional Details:

Baer is salary that needs to leave Van. Change of scenery could respark his career.
Goldobin is B+ NHL ready prospect that would likely love to play with other Russian players.
1st round pick is necessary to pay for a playoff rental of Kreiders calibur.

bad trade. Van needs to get SB off the books for sure but can't afford to for our picks/prospects at this point... and that pick is conditioned to TBL right now so they can't make that trade until after the draft

so dumping sven's salary, what are you giving up for that. Goldobin is not a b+ prospect as a 24 year old in the AHL. at once he was but he lost his 3rd pairing gig to fantenberg. doesn't exactly scream b+ prospect-- on top of that you are selling the rangers on a prospect where they have about over 8 better options on D (Skjei, Trouba, Fox, ADA, Lindgren, Miller, Rykov, Lundkvist, or Keane)-- plus you are dumping some salary which you would have to pay more for... rangers will just work with boston, colorado, or any of the other 5 teams that'll pay more for him
