Ottawa Trade

Created by: Karr31
Team: 2019-20 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2020
Published: Jan. 24, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Curious what it'd look like. Ottawa gets 1 D with term + another young with potential that needs change of scenery (value of 3rd rd pk), while Dallas gets a low risk winger who they can make a decision on in off-season based on fit & performance during the run. Cap change is minimal - Dallas gets slight savings, but Ottawa gains term on a solid still young D to support their rebuild + opportunity to develop a pretty high potential D prospect who already has 87 games in NHL.

Pretty weak return for the season Duclair is having - they'll just keep him if this is the best offer

Oleksiak is not a 1D he's a bottom pairing physical defender.
Also he was traded not too long ago for a fourth round pick.

Jamie Oleksiack is a 1D? Maybe when he was in Junior.

Ottawa declines pretty easily.

Twice. He was traded for that 4th twice.

I didn't mean 1D as in top pair, just meant one of the D in the trade, with the other being Honka.

Understood that thought. Also know though that a few teams have taken a chance on him and moved on due to inconsistency. Figured 2 defensemen would be good value, especially considering one has term, and the other is looking for another opportunity and wouldn't cost much initially, and has good upside. They may both be fringe at this point, but Duclair isn't likely considered a top 6 guy in most locker rooms either. They'll likely sell while his value is high knowing this could be the peak, so you could be right, but I also think this offer would be considered.

Honestly, no disrespect but this offer would be laughed at and Nill's number would be blocked for such an outrageously poor trade offer. Oleksiak isn't very good (he's a bottom pairing D, nothing more whatsoever, and Ottawa has a ton of those), and Honka is pretty damn bad at just about every aspect of the game (he's not the offensive prince that was promised, and he's doing worse in Liiga than his brother who is like 5 years younger). The Sens either keep Duclair if that's the only offer they get because it's getting back nothing but garbage, or they get infinitely better offers. Dallas could offer their 2020 1st rounder in the trade, and Ottawa still probably turns it down.

Could Duclair be had? Possibly. Could he had by two guys that could only crack the bottom pair or 7th D spots? Absolutely not.
