Big trade with Tampa

Created by: justaBoss
Team: 2019-20 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2020
Published: Jan. 24, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
ANA
  1. Cernak, Erik
  2. Gourde, Yanni
  3. Johnson, Tyler
  4. 2020 1st round pick (VAN)
  5. 2021 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
TB is in trouble the next year with some RFAs they need to sign, since they lack the money to do it. This trade gives ANA some great future assets in Cernak plus two firsts, and saves TB money. Also Ducks receive some good assets to replace Rakell and Kase...

Oh, and let's just assume these two waive their NTCs.
TBL
  1. Kase, Ondrej
  2. Larsson, Jacob
  3. Rakell, Rickard
  4. 2021 4th round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
TB needs to save money while remaining competitive. Moving two NHL roster forwards would make their contending team weaker, which is why they look for some in return. Rakell and Kase brings the same talent, or possibly even more to their team...

ANA says no. Sticking two $5m+ contracts with 4+ years left after this season is a non-starter. Sure the two 1sts are nice, but you're hurting their cap hard here for years. Not worth it for them. They're rebuilding (maybe retooling) and this would hurt them.

Over/under 5 goals for ANA next year if this happens (for the whole year)

Tampa is a lot closer to cup contention then Anaheim, No way Johnson or Gourde leave Tampa for the Ducks. If they waive it will be for another cup contender not a cellar dweller.

Yeah I literally mentioned this in the trade... I'm just assuming they waive. realistically they won't be doing that.

Note that the $10,364,687 "cap space" in the upper-right-hand corner gives a false sense of security as to Anaheim's actual financial situation next year.

ANA has no real money trouble, those contracts swing by.

As a ducks fan I’m not a fan of this. 5 and 6 years for guys that haven’t lived up to their cap hits is a tough pill to swallow. I think Rakell could get a 1st+ alone. I liked Cernak a couple seasons ago and then with then Czechs at World’s but hasn’t he fallen off a little bit? Couldn’t Kase, Larsson, and a 4th get Cernak? I just don’t like the idea of 10+M in cap space locked up for 5 years in 2 guys that haven’t performed for a 1st.

I know ducks fans tend to over value Kase but I still think teams would love to have him and he has solid value as a metric darling. He may not develop into the 30 goal guy people wanted him to be in the offseason but he hit 20 already in his career in a good team.

Those contracts are 5 and 6 years - when they need to sign their young players or UFA's, these contracts will hurt. That's a long time

Tampa's not going to entertain anything like this. Yes they're gonna be in a tight cap situation but they've been aware of it for at least 2 years. They'll have thought of something better. Johnson and Gourde are good enough and not on bad deals that they won't be hard to move. Tampa might have to sell low on them, but they won't have to add a significant amount to move them. Also remember that players like playing in Tampa and take discounts all the time (Stamkos, Point, Kucherov, Hedman, etc.) so don't count out the very real possibility that Sergcahev and Cirelli take bridge deals for cheaper, and Cernak really won't cost that much. He's a #4 guy at best right now and they don't make huge amounts of money

also, Gourde is not the player you think he is. He doesn't belong anywhere near the second line

I think the value is fair, but the trade still feels terrible. Basically puts us in full rebuild, which I don’t think we need. Honestly, I think we are one hit on a top 3 pick away from being a real contender again. We have the youth coming through. Hopefully we get an opportunity to draft top 3 this year (Laf, Byfield, Stützle). Then we have one more year at the bottom half of the league next season. Then we should start to see the team turn it around the next season, Zegras coming through and Steel, Lundestrom, Comtois, Jones, Terry, Larsson/Mahura all seasoned players. If we keep drafting well and add few high quality D prospects, I think we’ll be fine. Just need some elite talent at C and D.
