Curious, unrelated to this... would you want to undo the Nino for Rask trade from Carolina side?

Who was Nino playing with last year? He had 30 points in 36 games for CAR last year.

I know this is for next season but I think CAR should be trading for Toffoli now. He fits their analytical approach perfectly. Last I saw his xGF/60 was very good. Would balance them out up front really well.

I like Toffoli but forwards are not top priority. Need a defenseman who is defensively responsible first.

I’m curious why we bring in a bunch of new forwards but bring back the same defenseman and goalies. Tells me you think we have a problem with forwards and not the backend...

Carolina has long been known as having one of the league's best defense cores. I think there's reasonable bounce back potential here given that they can first solidify the right side forwards. I also don't think Staal is a top 6 forward and would be more impactful to the defensive aspect of your team as a third liner. I thought about bringing in somebody else instead of Edmundson, but then realized the options out there would most likely result in severe overpayment.
In short, let the defense core have a shot at proving themselves knowing their forward core is elite, not average. The defense is advertized as "Above average" and i believe it is still in them. If not, that can be your 2020 deadline move rather than overpaying for a top/middle 6 forward.

Also, what's wrong with the goalies? They both have decent save percentages, especially (and surprisingly) reimer.

I 100% agree with everything you just said, but you can run Haula as a 2C. Play Dzingel and Necas on his wings, and drop Nino to the 3rd line with Williams. Overload the first line with the big boys and run Foegele - Wallmark - Martinook on that 4th line. The Defense is fine if Gardiner wakes up. He's been great but he's not producing. Edmundson has been.... put it this way, I wouldn't mind dumping that deal to spend it elsewhere at the deadline.

My feedback on this team, as unbiased as I can be...their defensive core is best in the league good, but their ‘core’ is more shallow than most people think (Slavin, Dougie, Pesce), but the rest is average at best. Edmundson, Gardiner, Fleury and TVR are all playing above in the lineup where they should be. The pivot point is a solid defenseman who can be a responsible 3/4/5. Obviously the Dougie injury hurts this bad. On the ice this year, the Canes are the best at suppressing shot quantities but of the chances they give up, a high percentage of they are quality chances from vulnerable places on the ice.

Take this to the Goalies - the above point is why both Goalies are performing at a higher level than expected. I, like everyone else, have been pleasantly surprised with the play of James Reimer. I also have concerns that the current group can win a cup. However, I think fixing the defensive issues will be easier than fixing the goalies.

Columbus declines... we have no use for nino... we are pretty set on the wings. Wennberg has been better recently and if he can become more consistent he’d be a good 2nd line center. That being said, Columbus would then need another 2nd line center and need more cap room to acquire him... thus Columbus would keep Wennberg unless offered more.
