Pittsburgh Trades for Kasperi Kapanen READ Details

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Smartest Move for Toronto to solve their issues in one trade...Toronto trades Kasperi Kapanen age 23 (3,200,000) and a 2020 Second Round pick To the Pittsburgh Penguins FOR Goaltender Casey DeSmith age 28 (1,250,000K 3yrs, Defensemen Juuso Riikola age 26 (850K RFA) and Forward Dominik Simon age 25 (750K RFA) = TOTAL CAP USAGE of $2,850,000. THIS TRADE also opens up 350,000K in Cap Space for the Maple Leafs. Kapanen has 28pts and Simon has 20pts in roughly the same amount of games. They both play wing and the Maple Leafs get a YOUNG NHL proven CHEAP Defensemen with upside AND a proven NHL Backup/Starter (if given chance and needed). The Second Round pick is because Kapanen has lots of name value but his stats don't demand that he's even much better than Simon in production plus Simon has played with Crosby and has developed very well in his 200 foot game. This move HELPS TORONTO in four different areas (Goaltending, at forward, at defense and with THE CAP). This trade gives Pittsburgh a familiar face and someone who fits their style and gives them a second round pick which they had traded away prior.

Toronto isn't trading Kapanen for a backup goalie. You have to throw in something more impressive. Desmith might get you Bracco but definitely not Kapanen he's too valuable to that team both on and off the ice

Yea I don’t see Simon getting moved. Think Sully likes to touch punch his fart box or something. Loves the guy. I wouldn’t mind seeing Simon get moved in the right deal though.

Buffalo has no cap room for Gally . Plus they are not in the rental market. Bogosian for Gally is best you will get.

Doubt the Leafs want to move their 2nd round pick in a deep draft that they currently don't have a 1st in. There's other ways to get depth players and backup goalies.

But it not just a back up goalie, it's an AHL goalie. So many CapFriendly followers think the Leaf need other teams bottom end Dmen and secondary goalies at any cost. Actually Hutchinson has played well in last maybe five appearances. Most of Hutchinson's early season woes were also the result of poor play by the team in front of him. Leafs will live or die with Andersen this season and if I was betting, the Leafs will part of the out of playoff teams.

Agreed, that's one of the reasons I didn't get the ACGMs suggesting they get Stalock from the Wild. Stalock is passable in the Wild's system because they don't tend to give up a ton of high danger shots. Dubnyk probably leads the league in giving up low risk shots he should absolutely make the save on, Stalock has done a better job of making those routine saves and looked like a better goalie than he really is.

It's Crosby with the man-crush on Simon.

If you are looking for a package including Kapanen and a 2nd from Toronto... it would probably be Murray going the other way. There would be more to the overall trade, but... I'd love DeSmith and pieces for Kapanen, I just don't see it happening unfortunately.
