Leafs TDL

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 28, 2020
Published: Jan. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
They run 7 D. This would set up their Dcorp into next year. Maybe a bit of an overpay for Dumba, but it would take an overpay. Maybe a bit of an underpay for Larsson and the 2nd?

Next year they would have the following Dmen Signed already
Rielly-Dumba
Sandin-Larsson
XXX-Holl

Maybe they can try to resign muzzin. Dcorp looks nice like that.

But why? Just pick one target and call it a day. The Edmonton trade is closer to a reality and wouldn't hurt the team, but the Dumba trade is a bit much for a 2nd pair defenceman making 1st pair money.

It was more about shoring up the defence past this year. This gives them a lot of really good options on D for this year if injuries happen. And into next year it gives them a really good foundation. The team is still loaded up front and could really use some support on the right side of defence (longterm). Their Left side on D is quite stacked right now.

I don't think Edmonton is much interested in Bracco. If he was removed, what happens to the other side of the trade?

I think Edmonton should absolutely be interested in Bracco. He is an high level playmaking winger (no opportunity yet at the NHL) . He would definitely get a shot on Edmonton, as they have some serious holes up front. As for what happens if he is removed... It would be hard. I think Larsson is worth a bit more than Johnsson straight up. I think the 4th and bracco is worth the same or a little bit more than the 2nd.

If the trade remains as is, I could definitely see Toronto's 4th being turned into a 3rd.

Don't really like either trade. Lots of to give up for Dumba who is not the impact #1 RHD everyone craves. Not a great guy to pair with Rielly from what I've seen. And I'm not sure Larsson is an upgrade from Ceci based on the numbers from this year (and his performance last year).

If they are going to add at RHD it's one guy, not two. If they flip Tyson Barrie to a team desperate for what he does (like Carolina) then maybe they look to add another guy. I'd rather take a run at Dylan Demelo. Has done great for Ottawa (which is saying something) is cheap now and could be resigned for a not outrageous sum.

Currently from what we can assume will happen based off Muzzin and the Leafs talking contracts. We will have the following Defence next year.

Rielly-Dermott
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Liljegren
Marincin

I am fine with that.

That Left side looks amazing. The right side is missing a high level piece for sure. It doesn't look bad but It would be great to get someone impactful to push Dermott and Holl down 1 slot. Then that group would be super fire. Currently Dermott is playing left side, but I know he has played on the right in the past. Would be great to give him a shot on the right this year to see if he can handle it.

And push Liljegren out of the lineup? He's going to earn his spot next year. He's going to be a solid NHLer very soon.

Nothing I have seen from Dermott makes me comfortable about him in a first pairing role as the more defensive partner. He has potential, and we all hope he can make the leap, but at some point we have to come to the conclusion that it's less and less plausible. I would be very much against this setup just to see if he can handle it.

I would split up Liljegren and Sandin IMO. Two rookies together is probably not great. I'd prefer:

Rielly-????
Muzzin- Liljegren
Sandin-Holl
Dermott?????

That's not perfect, things I think are very influx there. Not sure what happens with that 1RHD and Dermott, but I don't think that's the fix.

Dermot has been a possession monster his entire career. Has elite level skating and plays with an edge. He also is just 23 and has been at his best when he's been tasked with being the responsible one on his pair. He's not an offensive defenceman, he's a two way guy with loads of tools to become a very dependable top 4 guy. People who don't understand hockey shouldn't talk like they do.

Edmonton already has a high level playmaking winger in the system though - Tyler Benson. They need goal-scorers more than playmakers.

I mean, we can disagree and still be civil. All of Dermott's positive metrics are as a sheltered third pairing guy. It remains to be seen if he is capable of playing up in the lineup.

Penciling him in on the top pair is hopeful at the least.

He can play his off side and has been at his best when playing with an offensive guy that he can support with his blazing speed. Rielly can do what he does and Dermott will support him. Seems like a good idea. Unless something better presents itself. Overpaying just because of fan angst is not wise.
