Description

The Blues need a ton of cap space for next year when Tarasenko returns. Clearing Allen and Schenn (even though he just signed the extension in October) clears almost $11M which gives them enough to extend Pietrangelo and Athanasiou.

Detroit also picks up extra 1st rd picks in order to pick up the whole contracts of Schenn and Allen.

Detroit drafts Lafrenière first and Rossi at 7.

Schenn and Allen aren't useless cap dumps. Not sure what's going on here, but it's an awful idea for STL. They can just figure out a way to move guys like Bozak/Sanford/Gunnarsson, maybe have to buyout the last year of Steen, or worst case end up trading Schwartz or Perron... or miss out on Pietrangelo... but any of those options are better than tossing away 1st rounders and a top six center for a guy like Athanasiou, who IMO is an ineffective hockey player.
