Habs Sell now to build 2020-21 Roster of Youth

Created by: Billy739
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2020
Published: Jan. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kovalchuk gets re-signed as he's fit in here right now . 1 year deals at 4m this year at the start and is warming the seat for Gallagher. When BG is re-signed the next summer we wont re-sign Kovalchuk unless Bennett doesnt work out or Caufield needs more time .

Sold on all UFA's coming up in the next 2 years will all walk but Kovalchuk .
Lowry and Foligno will fill holes until Gallagher and Armia return or if they dont we'll re-sign them to plug holes and lay out a couple hundred hits

I built the team to still remain entertaining and competitive enough that on any given night 1/4 lines could steal a game for us. All 4 lines have a combination of Skill , Grit and Heart.

Remember Gallagher and Armia are hopefully Returning like Plekanec did
This is just giving them a chance at a Cup while our youth play big minutes
Win Win especially with the Seattlle Kraken's expansion happening this year (2020-21)

Most important you'll notice all the guys i got to skate with our Youth are all known to protect their teammates . Most of them have size and credit where its due Foligno's one of the NHL's only players with a history of winning vs Tom Wilson

Trades
1.
MTL
To Seattle in Expansion for cost TBD at a later date on a different post. (to much going on in this post already )
    2.
    MTL
    1. Bennett, Sam
    2. 2020 2nd round pick (CGY)
    Additional Details:
Conditional 2nd becomes a 1st if CGY makes WCF with Tatar playing 50% games or more . (27th-31st OA)
    CGY
    1. Tatar, Tomas
    Additional Details:
''if we trade TT i feel like we got to get a younger TT in return with a pick, someone who was struggling after new contract or to establish themselves in another system'' Stu Cowan
    3.
    MTL
    1. De La Rose, Jacob [RFA Rights]
    2. 2020 2nd round pick (STL)
    Additional Details:
if STL wins the cup with Armia playing 50% or more the 2nd becomes a 1st in 2020

Similar structure to the plekanec deal with an addition of making it conditional because Armia's a big bodied battler who's found a nack for scoring PP goals.
    STL
    1. Armia, Joel ($1,300,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
i think MTL tried to sign him in the summer like they did Plekanec giving him a shot on a contender while leaving pieces on the table in hopes this will earn favor with Armia come contract time .
    4.
    MTL
    1. Groulx, Benoit-Olivier
    2. Mahura, Josh
    3. 2020 2nd round pick (ANA)
    ANA
    1. Danault, Phillip
    Additional Details:
ANA brings in Danault and signs him to a 5 year 4.9m deal with 1m per year in salary bonus.

ANA is a team fortunate enough that they could make 2-3 teams and become a contender again because they got standout prospects like Comtois ,jones, and Steel playing awesome in their stints.

Henrique and Danault could take and win as many faceoffs combined as Getzlaf and Kesseler did or close to anyways. This allows ANA time to groom Steel or your pick to replace Getzlaf as top Center for a decade .
    5.
    MTL
    1. Gawanke, Leon
    2. Lowry, Adam
    3. 2021 2nd round pick (WPG)
    Additional Details:
conditional 2nd becomes a 1st if WPG wins 2 rounds with Petry playing 50% or more
    WPG
    1. Petry, Jeff ($2,000,000 retained)
    6.
    MTL
    1. Coburn, Braydon
    2. Fortier, Gabriel
    3. Katchouk, Boris
    4. 2020 1st round pick (TBL)
    Additional Details:
MTL takes Coburn purely so Gallaghers Cap fits in TBL
the cost of a 30 goal scorer and to take Coburns dump is 2 Junior prospects and a 1st (whichever picks later is MTL)
    TBL
    1. Gallagher, Brendan ($1,875,000 retained)
    Additional Details:
    Gallagher @ 1.8m

At that cap many teams would pay more for a 30 goal scorer then MTL is asking but the goal is to put Gallagher in a position to win a cup today then come home when they cant re-sign him

Fortier like his brother has the skills but he's not built for the NHL so bringing him to a team who knows how to develop undersized players makes sense for all involved .

Katchouk i believe is the edge Laval needs to win a Championship and out of that experience i believe he'll become a better players and ready for a call up
    7.
    MTL
    1. Foligno, Marcus
    2. 2021 2nd round pick (MIN)
    8.

some we could get more for sure but i didnt want to battle on half a dozen trades over the difference of a slightly higher pick or slightly better prospect.

the Gallagher trade i took quantity and quality to put him on a team that has no chance in resigning him for a reason .
That being said Fortier is a gem . Mr Irving on a winning team fired the coach and GM because they werent aggressive enough.
The new GM came in and traded for all 3 of the former top 3 OA picks in the 2016 draft in BO Groulx, Gabriel Fortier , jared McIsaac .
This new team's been destroying everyone in their path as they already possesed a solid team with Gold Medal Goalie Rodrigue along with
Khovanov the only player besides Lefreniere with over 2 points a game all season
L'heaueux top 15 projected 2021 NHL draft prospect who leads Rookie scoring with over a point per game at i believe 38 in 36 games last i checked.
along Pelltier the Oilers 1st round F Axel Anderson BOS 2nd round D ,Jordan Spence LAK 4th rounder D,Cyr and Mckenna

Fortier stock's about to go way up as is Groulx .

Tatar i shoulda got another pick or prospect but it wasnt worth fighting CGY fans over it as they over value Bennett.
that being said i think Bennetts game in Claude juliens system means he takes on the Lucic role of aggressive forechecker and net front presence in the middle 6

Danault trade's fair as Muhara is a beast who just so happen to lead the WHL in points paired with Fleury for 2 WHL seasons which isnt the selling point just convenient .
Groulx is basically Domi without fighting skills lol but i really like his never say die leadership mentality .

Petry i stole that trade from a Montreal Gazette Pat Hickey write up but i swapped Lowry in and Vesalainen out as i wanted a guy who is solid but also protects youth and can fight.

Armia , Chiarot and Weal deals could be argued for sure
Armia the hope is like Gallagher to put him on a team that cant afford to keep him in hopes we re-sign him
we could get more in an open market but it was a tactical deal

Bennet, DLR, Muhara , Groulx, Gawanke , Fortier ,and Katchouk is a good haul when you're adding a 1st and five 2nd's including 3/5 2nd's are conditional 1st's
plus the inclusion of size , hitting and the ability to kick Reaves or Wilsons butt if needed by adding Lowry and Foligno .

We could have haggled for slightly more but MTL got quality picks in positions the could use going forward now that Suzuki , Poehling , KK and Fleury are in the NHL our AHL prospect pool is in need of quality.DLR seems like a bad call but there wasnt much to pick from as far as B level prospects in STL that had value so i took what i knew .
