As much as I love the 70s throwback idea of a classic homme francais being an elite star in Montreal. I have to say, when trading away a 1st overall pick, no GM has ever said "I really hope we can squeeze a 4th rounder out of them." You are trading your 1st round pick, not 4th. You need to convince THEM to say yes. They don't HAVE to trade, they can just take the best player in the draft.

Yeah and montreals 1st round pick if it's in the top 5 and add in primeau.

Poehling, Domi, Primeau, kotkinemi, this year's first(top5) considering they are saying that lafreniere is the best winger since Patrick Kane to come into the draft.

I agree. Montreal's first goes back instead of 4th and maybe Detroit considers. Lafreniere is a franchise player.

Think of it this way - you have a better chance winning the draft lottery and getting #1 versus crafting a package to trade for it. Pretty good rule of thumb.

I'm thinking Montreal's 1st Romanov, Caufield and Primeau for the #1OA and Abdelkader assuming Detroit even wins the lottery.

"HE HERO MTL NEEDS IS FRENCH OLE OLE OLE". The one thing Lafreniere doesn't need to be drafted by Montreal and have the idiot Montreal media and fan base thinking he has to be French hockey hero.

Betcha Lafreniere would just hate been drafted by the Habs. Maybe come back in 8 years when he's is a UFA

Some Habs fan remind of when Garth Snow offered all the Islanders' 2012 picks, including their own 4OA, just for the sake of drafting Ryan Murray. lmao

Overpayment would be needed, nothing is impossible (Lindros). If I was DET, I would ask the next 4 years first round, MTL A prospect D (Romanov), A prospect C (Suzuki) and A prospect G (Primeau) and maybe a few players or picks or both. If not, go pound some sand. That is probably why this is unlikely to happen as Bergevin is a bit frugal with trades.
