Yeah i get the logic. I just disagree with it wholeheartedly.
I love how the guy Habs fans almost shot out of a cannon last year In Drouin undid all of that within a 19 game span and is now not someone we can trade anynore. Then theres also the 28 year old, almost UFA whose having his best season and would make the most sense to trade in Tatar is also off the table apparently.....
......But Domi, the guy whose capable of playing center or wing, brings a physical element to his game that no other player has, is only 24 years old, is on pace for just under 60 points after putting up 72 points last year, is the guy the Habs should be trading......
Once again im not opposed to trading Domi. If the right package came along, im all for it but this idea that Drouin is a keeper, Tatar is a keeper but Domi is the expendable one, is mind boggling to me.
We both know if Drouin's name were Smith, he'd be in every trade discussion.... and if his name were Ivanov, he'd have already been traded out of Montreal. And perhaps Bergevin's replacement won't feel the need to keep him, but as long as MB is GM, he'll never admit that Drouin might have been a mistake.
Tatar is a more reliable winger than Domi, so if he's keen to sign a Plekanec-style deal, I think the Habs would be keen to keep him. The same might be true of Kovalchuk. Domi will be commanding $6M in his next contract.
So, if you think THIS YEAR'S TEAM is close to being good enough, then sign Domi, sign Kovalchuk and be as deep as possible. It means a lot of veterans won't be getting great ice time, and it leaves big questions for 2021-22, when the Habs have Gallagher, Danault and a whole lot more free agents to get signed.
