Helping to resolve the defense

Created by: jmac490

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2020

Description
The odds of getting Jokiharju are probably quite slim, but the Sabres have a surplus of defenseman, and Kappy/the 3rd should allow them to inject more speed into the lineup, or allow them to add another sizable asset.

The Demelo trade is likely an overpayment, but it helps get the majority of Ceci off the books and gives us 4 players that could play very well in a bottom pair role, and gives us more defensemen to use for the future if Dermott/Muzzin/Barrie expect too much money, as I believe Demelo won't make anymore than 2.75M/year on their next contract. The retention helps Melnyk out because he is a cheap owner. I kinda feel bad for Ceci because we are shipping him back to Ottawa, but he really liked his playing career there.

The offense should be strong enough for the playoffs. May just want a grit/energy guy to give the boys a boost on the bench (think like a Shawn Thornton or a Matt Martin esque character)

Comments are welcome. If you say no, can you please elaborate. Thank you.

I am a big fan of Dermott. Could just be the homer in me. Also Kappy seems like the odd duck out/cap scapegoat these days. Eichel needs a fast linemate anyway.

I like the moves, but what's the point of trading for a guy just not to play him? And scratching Dermott seems wrong too. I'd consider moving Dermott in a package for a better RHD depending on whether we resign Muzzin. Maybe Dumba? or someone in that vein.

I really like Dumba (he helped to carry my team early, on my fantasy team), but I don't think the Leafs want him. He hasn't been himself since the pectoral injury. He also doesn't seem to compliment anyone on the Leafs (in regards to playstyle), as he is also an offense first defenseman. We already have Reilly, Barrie, and Sandin to fill those roles on our 3 pairs.

And its not exactly scratching Dermott, its just playing who is playing well. Having 8 capable defenders helps create some competition so no one remains stagnant on the roster (also helps if anyone else gets injured).

I wish Dubas would have talked to Bowman in the off season, could have handed him something like Bracco or Engvall or something. Alex Nylander was mediocre in the AHL and isn't doing much more in the NHL. Maybe we could have got Jokiharju for essentially nothing.

Bracco for Jokiharju would have been a sick trade for the Leafs. Alex Nylander hasn't exactly been lighting it for Rockford/Chicago either

On a separate note, I really would like to see Bracco go somewhere where he'll get a 2nd line shot and PP time, I do think he's an NHL player, but just never in TO. Its not that he isn't good enough, he just isn't going to be on the bottom 6 and he'll never get into the top 6 because if one of those spots open up, Kapanen moves in and they'll get a more defensive guy to replace him.

I'm honestly impartial on Bracco. I've worked with people that worked with the Kitchener Rangers in the past and have buddies who played a season with Bracco (on the Rangers) who say his attitude is what is holding him back. Maybe if he changes his perspective he may find himself somewhere in a Top 6. But it obviously won't be in Toronto (just because of depth, and I'm sure Keefe has other favourites).

Engvall? After seeing what he's done so far this season...he's going to be even more valuable next season imo.

This was context for the previous offseason (before we actually got to see Engvall in the show). I, too, really like Engvall and I think he deserves as much playing time in the Middle 6 as possible.

Honestly he has impressed me to the point that I think he wouldn't look out of place on the second line. That said, he's going to get used on the third line because that should and will create matchup problems for other teams.

I would prefer if he played with JT and Nylander. Engvall is like Hyman in the sense that he plays hard in the corners, and isn't afraid to chase down dumped pucks. He also has enough offensive awareness to know where to be, and has the hands to be able to pass and shoot effectively. Mango-Kerfoot-Kappy/Spezza/Moore would be a strong enough 3rd line (also fast)

I love him as well but if I could have gotten Jokiharju for him that's pretty sick

Kerfoot's speed is terrific with Nylander and Tavares. I love that line.

Ceci despite the protests from CF followers is the Leafs shut down RHD Dman. He has played well since Keefe arrival. Is DeMelo truly any better than Ceci? CaN DeMelo adapt to Keefe style of hockey in few month immediately? Maybe DeMelo is a guy you might want as UFA, but no reason to think he's going to play as well as Ceci right now.

Maybe I haven't watched enough Leafs games as of late... I thought the shutdown pair was Muzzin-Holl. Demelo plays with Boro for the most part in Ottawa and they run a pretty decent 3rd pairing

Then maybe the Leafs don't have any ranked pairings that so many want to give players. Who played RHD last night against Dallas for the last 1.5m minutes protecting against Dallas.....Ceci.
