The right moves for the deadline

Created by: Kirby
Team: 2019-20 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2020
Published: Jan. 31, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Two trades that are not overly outlandish that have benefits for all teams involved.

Toronto gets the D-man they need and tried to acquire last summer along with a roster player to replace what they are losing, also retaining salary to make it work for their cap.

San Jose gets a roster player and some picks to help rebuild in return for a disgruntled forward on an expiring contract.

Calgary receives the right wing depth they desperately need along with a tiny bit of cap flexibility. Keep in mind that Andersson's contract will officially be on the books starting next season and will take up an additional 4.5 mil.

Thats not nearly enough for San Jose to move an RFA making next to nothing that just had a 56 point season. Especially to a division rival

Flames management wont retain on Brodie. LeBanc is better than Kapanen so just keep Brodie, put LeBanc next to Monahan

I think Kap is probably the most chased winger on the market at the moment.
He's young, has term, and he's a decent role guy. Make no mistake he's not the "talent" on any line but he seems to do ok fitting in. Every team needs some role players in the middle 6.
TOR needs defensive help and some cap space for it, so that part kind of makes sense.
I'm willing to be there are probably 3-4 teams looking into getting him. The question is do the leafs move him. I don't see them getting much of a return on Johnsson and I don't think they would trade anyone else other than maybe Moore, but he too doesn't hold any real value to improve on the blue line.

So I think Kaps trade happens, how it happens is a different story. I see them dumping an expiring D contract and Kap to get a D back.

Toronto is really overpaying here, Kapanen alone is worth more then Brodie and Czarnik has little value, this would be a really bad trade by Dubas if it happened.

San Jose isn't making that trade.
