Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2020
Published: Jan. 31, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
CHI
  1. Backes, David
  2. 2020 1st round pick (BOS)
BOS
  1. Smith, Zack ($250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
How could Boston say no to this? Saves them 3mil in cap, gives them a useful PK, 4th line player (albeit on a bad contract, BUT with the same term as Backes) We saw that 6million in deadcap was worth a first when Carolina ate that Cap from Toronto. Boston saves 3million this year and next year, OR can save 3mil this year and buyhim out in the offseason and save 5million next year (Relative to Backes contract at 6) Even if Backes is stashed in the minors the cap relief is significant.

The first could easily be substituted for one of their top prospects.

its bc its heavily favoured to basically buying a 1st round pick. His buyout is 4m and 1m cap hits for the next 2 seasons. Smith is actually worse than Backes, so with Smiths cap hit next year vs Smiths cap hit, all they are doing is adding 750k-1m (including this retention) in cap space to get a 1st round pick.

Bruins tell them to pound sand with this deal.

What makes you think Smith is worse than Backes?

This would never happen. I’m not sure you’re aware of how many UFAs we need to sign this year.
This is why you have one of the worse gm reps in the league

Odds are one of DeHann, Shaw, Seabrook retires (looking at you Shaw) and for the record, Stan Bowman isn't looked down upon by his peers. At least theirs no evidence to support this claim.

not saying backes is some sort of prize pig either, but Smith has been for a few seasons now, he has some very ugly underlying numbers

Backes can never, and will never, be on the same team as Seabrook.

That would be a good wakeup call for both of them (+ Keith)

Rather keep the 1st. Unlike Leafs we don’t have to move him. Would help, but not necessary.

This post is mainly inspired by an article that I read which suggested that the Bruins were looking to trade him (Hence why he is not reporting to AHL)

There are lots of evidence to support my claim
Example panarin
Shaw won’t retire yet

They are. It they are looking at including him in a deal with something significant coming back and overpaying to compensate for Backes being involved. They won’t mind giving up the 1st then. Just giving it up to dump him. Not going to happen. They will just buy him out next year if it comes to that.

I know Boston is getting real value back, but the thing that made the Marleau trade work was that all $6.25 million was gone off Toronto’s books. Here, the Bruins only get $3 million in savings and they aren’t going to be right up against the cap like the Leafs were anyways. I don’t think it’s worth it to them

As a Hawks fan you have to at least retain half of Smith's deal because Boston is a cap team. If you do not retain half change the 1st to a 2nd or a B or better prospect

Wow, I gotta say, this is a total rip off for Boston. Again, love to get a pick as a hawks fan, but Jesus, I’m very much a realist.

Wait, did I just see someone say there’s no evidence to make the claim that bowman is looked down on by his peers?! WHAT?!

Yeah, Like it or not Bowman is not in the bottom half of NHL GM’s.

That’s not what you said. You said he isn’t looked down on and there isn’t evidence to say he is. There really, REALLY, is.
