TJ Brodie already denied a trade to the Leafs in the summer with his modified NTC. Otherwise I'd be thrilled as a Leafs fan

Other than the whole Brodie NTC thing I like the trade. But I don't believe the flames would pay that much as they most like wouldn't pay Barrie what he wants unless he magically learns to play defence

For better or worse, Hank will always be a Ranger. That much is clear.

And if by some impulse he changed his mind, this wouldn't be nearly enough. He's still outperforming his environment. On a better team, he'd be lights out on a regular basis.

Cant afford to resign Barrie next year so this is an overpayment for a rental

It was Kadri and not Brodie who shot that deal down

Apparently Brodie has put Toronto on his list of places he's unwilling to wave his NTC for

So leafs say yes but I have a question.

Why are we getting a first round pick in this deal?

Ok we can break this down because in a nutshell the value is fine but Flames wouldnt do this. There needs to be a lot more conditions.
Barrie = Brodie + Bennett
Kapanen = late 1st (probably, or 2nd + B+ prospect) maybe not a 2020 1st though.
Barrie will demand a lot next year that the Flames need to spend on their top 6 instead so i would doubt they resign him for anything more than 6.5M. Ignoring Brodies M-NTC he would probably be a pretty solid partner D for Rielly because he is a fast PMD. Leafs would be smart to extend him. So this chamges the value a lot. Extended Brodie + Bennett + 1st is worth a lot more then not extedned Barrie + Kapanen

It's doesn't make any sense to talk about extensions for UFA players. It just can't be assumed that players or the teams want extensions.
Brodie and Barrie might be pretty even. It's Kapanen for Bennett and the first that is the long trade deal. Don't know if both teams do the deal. Flames probably don't want to give up a first and Leafs don't
want to weaken their teams for this year.l

If this trade is Hamonic instead of Brodie I'd be more willing to pull the trigger. See if we can get an extension from him. He's the kind of guy that would do great with Rielly, doesn't need the puck to make an impact.

Well I don't mind just a trade....but to make a trade which depends on "sign and trade", unrealistic, if you're talking about a playoff contender like the Flames.
