Ken Holland Wheels and Deals Two Blockbusters

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 2, 2020
Published: Feb. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edmonton gets the 23rd overall draft position.

The two trades are made after the season and contemporaneously, at or before the actual draft. I think that the resulting roster is much better than this year's team.

I have trouble suggesting back-up-goalie candidates for both Edmonton and Toronto, hence the blank.

Ken Holland doesn't know how to wheel and deal, Of all the longed tenured GM's in the league. Ken Holland has made the fewest trades.

These kinda make themselves, don't they? I mean, if the other teams called and suggested them, could he say No?

I mean it's possible, Just wouldn't get my hopes up here. I mean Holland does have better pieces to work with there in Edmonton then he did with Detroit so there's that.

Pretty sure he says no to Leaf trade.. that's RHD depth suicide

Thanks for the input. But with Rielly, Klefbom and Jones on the left set for at least two more years, all that's needed on the right is complementary players, not all-stars. I think these two moves improve the Oilers significantly. But your point is well taken. Larsson and Russell are off the books after next season, so some free agent work would almost certainly be necessary.

Feel like D as is locked up for more then 2 years and moving Russell or Neal in trade or buyout gives enough cap to chase a UFA winger for McD

True. With the Gagner money plus the difference between what I have signed Domi for and what Nurse will probably be signed for, you should have enough in hand to get a decent forward . . . if one is available. Who do you foresee pursuing?

I think one of the last things EDM needs is less good RHD....... even at the cost of better players elsewhere. I can see the Habs deal but the Leafs deal is all but surely not going to happen, although the value going back to Tor is exceptional. It just doesn't work overall for both team though.

Honestly I think its all up in the air until Benson gets his shot if he gels with McDavid problem solved internally and extra cap goes into getting higher end #3C. Player like Haula could be a safe bet as he could fill LW spot or #3C depending where the biggest need is and likely gets the typical ~3.5M range contract

That's sensible insight and a reasonable plan.

Yeah, your current team is much better off with Alex Chiasson instead of Max Domi and Darnell Nurse instead of Morgan Rielly.

1- I'm not an Oilers fan.
2- You left out three costly pieces in making those switches.

They're not costly pieces, they're futures, no more valuable intrinsically than fourth overall pick Jesse Puljujarvi.

Bear is not a future, he's there now playing well on an ELC. Bouchard is their higest rated D prospect, and one of the best around the league. We all know a 2020 1st is valuable. Those are all costly pieces to acquire, certainly each more costly than Puljujarvi at this point.

Well, I've thought this trade (and the comments, mainly your first one) over for the last four days and I have concluded that you are right. This trade strips too much from Edmonton's right side. Substitute Caleb Jones for Evan Bouchard and the trade moves from impossible to one chance in a million.
