how much would it take for the leafs to get Petry

Created by: beanie2911
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 4, 2020
Published: Feb. 4, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
obviously its to a major rival, so the price is going to be higher than if he were traded somewhere else. just wondering what it would take. here is what I think the basis of it would be, but I think this idea needs some work for sure. also, to all leaf fans. how do u bench Sandin if we trade for a d man and Reilly comes back? do we look to trade Dermott?
Trades
MTL
  1. Bracco, Jeremy
  2. Ceci, Cody
  3. Kapanen, Kasperi
  4. Liljegren, Timothy
Additional Details:
this is where I think the deal starts. I don't know if its totally fair though. Ceci is there for salary reasons really, and he expires after this year so he isn't really a burden on the habs. Kapanen would really help out their top 6(seeing him and domi on a line would be hilarious), plus he can kill penalties. he's young, not too expensive, and hes under term for a little while. liljegren is not a top tier d prospect, but hes got some solid potential, should be a really solid top 4 guy who can play special teams, and Bracco isn't anything super special, but he can eventually be really valuable on the power play, and should be a good playmaker on the wing in the top 9 if he can get his defensive game together. lmk what else should be added to either sad.

I dont think Petry is worth that much, maybe. but it would take that much(I think) to get him from a heated rival

From a Habs perspective, I would do this deal. Obviously, we'd have a huge hole at the right, but I'd reevaluate my cupboard at season end and make a trade for a 2RD if we're still thinking of trying again next year. If we're pure sellers, then this is a great start.

From a Leafs perspective, I doubt Dubas is willing to pay anything like that.

I mean...Leafs had to give up a 2nd rd pick to get Plekanec.

ya I dont think dubas pulls the trigger on this either, unless something else goes the other way that replaces liljegren. idk if thats possible though.

as has already been stated... leafs wont do this but thats likely the cost from leafs to habs because its intra division, rivalry, etc. HOWEVER, I dont think petry solves the issues for this team.

So upgrading from Ceci to Petry for 1-year would cost a .... 1st + 1st + 2nd + 3rd ... plus millions in cap-space ????

TRADE VALUES:

Kapanen = 1st + 2nd
Liljegren = 1st
Bracco = 3rd

CAP SPACE:

Kapanen = $3,200,000 x 3 years
Liljegren = $860,000 x 3 years

You don't think these contracts will come in handy?
And Petry making $5,500,000 will force Muzzin off the team next year, so it's basically a break even scenario next year.
Except we've given away Kapanen + Liljegren + Bracco.

The negotiations start with the same type of package Toronto gave up for Muzzin, and then fine tuning is needed based on Petry being at least as good as Muzzin, and the fact it is a division rival. Highly doubt Montreal wants Bracco or Ceci, neither offer much value at the moment.

His age + cap + term + RFA expiry all add value.
And a team that would trade for him is probably a contender ... so the first would be late (and probably lottery protected).
People pay a 1st ++ for rentals all the time. Whoever gets Kapanen has him for 3 playoff runs ... with potential improvement every year.

EXAMPLE:

Vancouver paid a 1st + 3rd + backup for TJ Miller last summer.
He was coming off a 13 goal / 47 point season (in 75 games). Similar numbers to Kapanen.
Except he was 26 while Kapanen is 23 and his cap-hit is $2,050,000 higher than Kapanen's.
That $2,000,000 difference in cap-space for 3 years is worth a 2nd by itself to a lot of teams.

Alright you asked.......Petry is not that good, he's not that good defensively nor is he an offensive juggernaut, he's mediocre at everything, there is no Weber in TO to play the tough minutes.

Both Siegel and Mirtle (both are Leafs sports writers for the Athletic) disagree with you. They both agree Petry is the best fit for TOR. Not to say it will happen, but still.

If this were a real offer from the leafs, MTL would probably have to retain 50% on Petry.

I can see Kapanen + Liljegren for Petry at 50% being a thing, if the Leafs need Habs to take on Ceci for a few months, MTL would just have to bite the bullet and do it, no need for Bracco
