Jets aren't buying out Dustin Byfuglien? They're terminating his contract. And fat chance of him playing this coming season. The guy hasn't skated since last April or so.

Agree and the Jets and Byfuglien are mutually terminating the contract. That means he's a free agent. Assuming he can play this season (big assumption), he would be willing to sign a free agent contract for this amount (not happening).

I know, and yet I still bet he would be better than Ceci

Just for comparison...
Buying out Byfuglien would cost the Jets
20-21 $3.6M cap, $2M pay
21-22 $2M cap, $2M pay

Trading retaining 50% would cost the Jets
20-21 $3.8M cap, $3M pay
21-22 $0 cap, $0 pay

If you want him, thoughts on Byfuglien 50% for Ceci 50%, or even Ceci straight... Byfuglien 50% for Ceci

No, he wouldn't be. He's a 34 year old man that is 260 lbs, who recently had ankle surgery. It will take months for him to get back into shape.

I would like you to refer to the last Leafs game and tell me that a fat man with a long reach and a busted ankle standing still would still be better than Ceci

Ceci having a atrocious game suddenly doesn't him make him a less preferable option then someone who hasn't played hockey in nearly a year.

I would like you to refer to ... the entire season. Like I can't understate how awful he's been. Problem is, if he was playing bottom pairing mins then sure a game like Florida you. can let slip. But because of injuries and lack of D he's been playing top 4 mins and before Keefe top 2 mins. He can't skate, he has no hockey sense, his shot is comparable to an ECHL player. I honestly would rather give a shot to a guy who has been a top 2 defence man his entire life for one season even on a bad ankle than let Ceci continue to even play 15 mins a night

My point is that Byfuglien isn't NHL ready. If you're bringing in someone to replace Ceci, you don't go for the guy who has been sitting around because he got bored of playing hockey. And you certainly don't give him 3.5 million.

Toronto would either move one of their current third line forwards or call up Liljgren to fill the hole if Ceci gets yeeted off of the team.

Good use of Yeeted ahah

I get what you are saying but lets just say Buff starts skating now and right before he deadline he signs and still skates for another couple weeks before a game. Your saying its not worth a shot?

I don't think it is. Even if he started skating today, I don't think he'd be properly ready until the playoffs.

Ceci is better than most of the Red Wings current core.

Detroit's D core is garbage right now, No one disagree's with that fact. It's the very reason why we suck right now. I'd take Hronek over Ceci any day same with Seider. Detroit's D core will be better probably as early as next season.

That's probably sufficient bribery to take on Ceci for the rest of the year, although I doubt he'd get much ice time.
