Darnell Nurse

Created by: budsallday
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2020
Published: Feb. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Leafs need to upgrade the top 4 D position and based on Kyle Dubas' recent transactions, he likes players he is familiar with. Darnell Nurse was a player of his on the Soo and I wonder if the Oilers fall out of a playoff spot, they trade him for some top 6 forward help and futures. I wonder if this gets it done or if it is an overpay by the Leafs? Who says No in this scenario?

I think the Leafs need to upgrade the 3C position (don't think Kerfoot is the guy) I would target a guy like Bonino who is a good and brings the experience.

(Also trying to make trades without giving up Kapanen. I really think he has more potential and he fits the Leafs mold - Unless what the Oilers want is Kapanen over Johnsson than I would probably make that trade)

Edmonton would probably say yes. I think Dermott can become a second pairing guy. Johnsson is a top 6 guy. The first and second rounders don't hurt at all.

This is an overpayment for a guy who doesn't make the Leafs better now or in the future

As an Oilers fan, I think the Oil won't move out Nurse at all until the playoff picture is settled (either missing or losing in some round)...but I could see something like this at the Draft if Nurse doesn't end up being key to playoff success. Cap wise, it would allow the Oil to do a lot more. I would be surprised to see the Leafs do this though as Jetman said above, would be tough cap-wise. If you can't sign Nurse long-term, the risk of only having him on a cheaper 2 year bridge before UFA would be too much to give up all this for him IMO.

Also Nurse has only ever played the left side. Doesn't fit great here.

laugh No way you're getting Darnell Nurse for those pieces, Besides he wants $8 million per. Good luck the Leafs don't have $8 million to give to him.

I like Nurse but it's big overpaymegnt for a player get close to UFA. Plus you haven't solved the RHD problem (if you were trying) by trading Ceci and not getting a RHD in return.
Kerfoot has been playing OK but as you should know, right now it isn't playing centre but mostly wing.

Nurse won't get $8M, that's his agent's opening position. Do you guys not understand how negotiating works?

Agree with much of this, but (a) Johnsson sucks, it would have to be Kapanen for Edmonton to consider, and (b) this doesn't allow the Oilers to do a lot more capwise, as Dermott needs a new contract this summer and his salary + Kapanen's will likely be within a million or so of a potential long-term Nurse deal - and roughly the same as a Nurse bridge deal.

He's basically a 40 point guy, with top 6 speed. I may be missing something, but just looking at point totals, he has top 6 numbers.

Johnsson has scored just TWO goals at 5v5 this year despite playing more than 75% of his time with Matthews, and mostly with Nylander on the other wing. That's AHL-level play.

Fair enough. I haven't looked any deeper into his stats other than point totals. I guess he would be more of a Kassian type player minus the grit, third player on a line with 2 better players.
