Adding More Grit and Work Ethic

Created by: jmac490
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2020
Published: Feb. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Boro has most of his starts in the D Zone, with positive possession numbers on an awful Sens team. Would help add more work ethic into the lineup. Would also give the Leafs another penalty killing defenseman (although Boro gets a few penalties.)

This is the lineup assuming that mostly everyone is healthy and Ceci remains on Ceci Island
Trades
TOR
  1. Borowiecki, Mark
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Pick transfers if one of these 3 conditions are met:
Boro does not resign with the Leafs
Leafs miss the playoffs in 2019/20 or 20/21
Dermott gets 30+ points in 20/21

Looking harder at his stats and he has poor possession stats, but he does play a lot on the PK/Defensive Zone... to me personally he passes the eye test. He isn't fast or flashy, but he generally doesn't make that many mistakes (granted I've watched maybe 6 or 7 Sens games all year).

He could potentially be boosted by Demelo, I just wanted to add more physicality to the Leafs

he's an over paid fringe bottom pairing guy that the leafs dont need. DeMelo would be a good add, but the leafs dont need someone who is worse than Marincin simply because he looks like he works hard and he fights

He is currently playing 18 mins/night (which I think is equivalent to a #4/#5 (kinda 18-20 mins is average for a 2nd pair guy), but again its Ottawa. He hasn't been a bum this year (18 points compared to like 3 every other year - compared to Dermotts 8 points in 40 games - Dermott has the potential though)
Would you do Demelo for Dermott 1 for 1 and then be willing to pay Demelo in the 2.5-3.5M range?

let me put it this way, guys like him dont break out and suddenly become good players for long at 30 years old. if he was suddenly as good as his 18 points represent than he'd be a freak of nature. It's a PDO luck spike and it wont last, and just because you play a lot doesnt mean you are worthy of those numbers, sometimes it just means that your team or coach is bad.
DeMello is actually really good defensivly and in his prime years so that wouldnt be the worst trade in the world. I'd hope to sign him to about 800k less than that though.

Do you see room for Dermott on the Leafs in the future? With Rielly, Sandin, Muzzin in the fold with Hollowell in the minors?

Also what are your thoughts on Barrie this year (I'm personally extremely fond of Barrie, and would like to keep him in the Dumba money range (6M) ).

Do you think the Leafs defense would look better with Holl, Barrie, Demelo on the right side or internally with Liljegren in the fold?

I try to move Dermott in a package for a top 4RD, ideally a better one than DeMelo, but if that's the best i can do i live with it. I dont think Dermott will ever be much more than a #4 himself.
I love Barrie at what he costs now, but not as much with the lofty extension he'll be seeking and the Leafs lack of another 2 way guy to go with Rielly (though i consider moving Rielly if Barrie and Muzzin sign reasonable extensions and someone wants to over pay for Morgan)
