I don't dislike Jensen like a lot of other Caps fans do, but I agree an upgrade there would definitely benefit us. I like Vatanen a lot as the option back there. He's a very sound player that brings everything positive Jensen did, but with less turnovers and more offensive upside. He's a solid penalty killer as well. It puts us in a position where we can choose between him and Gudas in the offseason and then bring in a replacement for the other.

Yannick Weber is brought in for defensive depth. We have plenty of left shot guys, but if one of our righties goes down and we'd like another righty to insert, I like Weber a lot as a depth option. He's capable of minute munching on a third pairing and supporting a penalty kill. I think he's a worthwhile 7/8 defenseman.

Nick Cousins isn't a necessity, but he's a player I've always loved and I think he'd be a great fit for us. He has a nice skillset and is very versatile. The fact that we could control him past this season makes him even more attractive for us. This gives us much nicer forward depth if a couple injuries go down.


I absolutely think this team can go win another Cup, and the upgrades and added depth will help us keep up with the upgrades made by teams like Boston and Pittsburgh. These moves don't disrupt the foundation of the team, but they still give us an improved team and the ability to support with injuries.
