This contract does nothing for the Oilers. #1 It walks Nurse right to UFA. #2 They now have like 13 players signed for next year with around 11 mil in cap space to get more signed. #3 This is a high cap hit, especially for 2 years

When you look at this contract and compare to the Morrissey contract it really starts to look bad.

This signing screams Nurse wants to test free-agency ASAP. I bet Oilers offered something along the lines of the Morrisey contract 8yrs @ 6.25 AAV more or less. Seems Nurse probably insisted for only 2 years so he took a slight discount.

What discount? They should have gotten at least 3 years. This contract lowers his trade value.

It seems that they don't have the cap space to sign him to long-term deal. They wouldn't agree to this unless they knew he is extending after this contract. The price tag of top four defensemen has gone up in recent years, so it's not fair to compare it to other bargain deals out there.

Then they should have done a one year 5 million dollar deal and looked to trade him as an RFA.

If the Leafs made this deal there would be no yes votes lol.

The length sucks but if the Oilers are unsure of the cap hits, this works fine. Matthews contract takes him right into UFA...its not that bad of a thing as each team will know where they stand at that time

He took under 6M per season, I agree the discount isn't much. Seems the price for top 4 defensemen is rising. Just 3-5 seasons ago this deal would have been outrageously high AAV. Now it's "reasonable". So many teams looking for a top 4 but very little availability according to Dreger. My guess is some team will offer Nurse close to 7M or more in free agency. Who knows maybe Nurse resigns but I think Oilers will overpay on next contract if they keep him.

Edited Feb. 10, 2020 at 5:37 p.m.. Reason: Spelling mistake
It’s because a contract like this that I’m starting to realize the Jets got a massive steal with Josh Morrissey

Not sure what this has to do with Nurse but his cap hit in the AHL is $4,425,000

It's a bad contract first off as the valuation is based on 81.5 making payout higher than % of cap hit. 2nd if Sal cap goes down not up that % of cap hit looks even more outta balance. The length/time period irrelevant to me if player doesn't want to leave Edm anyways and wants to be part of growth... don't forget they have Bouchard, etc coming along.

Bear with me, there's no diff in cap hit between mjrs n minors for Ladd. We don't know if Nurse pulls a Labanc to stick around, or portion thereof. It's not a Toronto contract nor anywhere near the max % of cap hit he could have commanded... Holland did good by buying himself time, not good in that he over spent %.

How much AAV does this deal translate to on, say a six year deal? Gotta be $7M+ right? Wow!

Crazy. In 2 years they'll wish like hell they locked him up for 6+ seasons. It's not like their cap problems are just gonna disappear in 2 years. They desperately need their A prospects, particularly on D, to become impact players sooner rather than later. That's the only way they can manage their cap and contend. Almost $5M next year wasted on buyouts and retained salary.

These numbers look pretty similar at first look. In fact, Nurse has been much more productive at 5on5.
