You would think so on salary but...he's regressed this year. I think Max Domi was a good comparable when he had a big down year and only got 3.15 per on a 2 year deal 2 years ago. Athanasiou is having an even worse year than Domi did then. That was my comparable.
Also, on cost, Pulju and Samorukov is a pretty good haul. If Pulju gets playing time, he should be able to transfer over half of his Karpat scoring to post 30-40 points. And Smorukov has the talent to be a doog 2 way second pairing dman in 2 years. If Khaira can snap out of his funk he is a good 4th line player who brings a lot of grit. So, a decent haul, considering Athanasiou's regression this season.
As for why I want the guy since he's having a bad year...I just want to see him fly with McD. It would be exciting as hell. And Kass won't be far behind he has good boots.
If we're splitting hairs, add a 3rd or 4th pick. But I don't see more than this being needed.
I suggest you take Samorukov out of that offer and replace him with Lagesson; here's why:
From Edmonton's perspective, (1) Puljujarvi has made it clear that he will not play for them again, (2) unless Holland can move Kris Russell this summer Lagesson seems to be the odd man out, and he has to clear waivers in order to play in Bakersfield... moving him makes sense if doing so help improve the roster, (3) Khaira seems to have lost his moxie this season, and the addition of Archibald, Nygaard, and even Haas has diminished JJ's role. (4) Athanasiou has top-six written all over him, and he can flat-out fly. He's had a poor year and might be available at a cost the team can manage.
From Detroit's perspective, (1) Puljujarvi is dominating a near AHL-calibre league that's loaded with veteran pro hockey players, (2) He will be anxious to get back to the NHL and prove his doubters wrong. He may do just that, but odds are that next season he is going to be a solid third-line wing who may (emphasis on the word "may") work his way up to second line duties by the end of the season. (3) Khaira is already an established, albeit inconsistent bottom six left wing, a decent penalty killer, and a guy who can step up once in a while, so that Mantha doesn't feel he has to. When he's on top of his game, Kharia is also a pretty solid puck possession player... its just that he hasn't been at the top of his game this season. (3) Lagesson is NHL ready, he'll make rookie mistakes, but he's ready for a regular role if he can be sheltered a bit. Detroit gets three inexpensive, young-ish, NHL (or NHL-ready) players who can each fill a role in the current line-up, therefore strengthening team depth.
Samorukov is a season or two away from real NHL action, and that time frame works well for Edmonton, not so well for Detroit. In two years Nurse will either be extended at great expense, traded away, or set to become an unrestricted free agent. By then, maybe sooner, Broberg and Samorukov will likely be pushing hard for regular NHL shifts. That may make one, or both, of Klefbom and Nurse a very valuable trade chip.
