Ottawa Hainsey Johnson

Created by: Chigurrhh
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 11, 2020
Published: Feb. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ottawa was willing to take on Zaitsev in exchange for a useful a player and maybe because they also thought he was decent. They also paid Hainsey a lot of money. Johnson fits that mold and can replace Hainsey on the team next year. Both have comparable underlying numbers and cap hits.

Hainsey isn't great but he's an expiring contract and a player that helped them on their last cup run.

Hainsey may be past his usefulness in my opinion. I also think Johnson is decent and with all due respect to hainsey this may be an overpayment.

My point is that they are basically the same. This trade is getting rid of Johnson's contract since Ottawa doesn't mind having that kind of player. This makes room for guys like POJ and Riikola to get playing time in the future.

No thanks. We dont want Johnson. We took Zaitsev to get Brown.

Take Johnson to replace Hainsey and to get a 2nd round pick.

Johnson is only gonna get worse and is signed way too long. You'd have to retain or give up additional assets.

I'd rather use the money to re-sign DeMelo.

I hate to break it you but the Senators have enough cap room to do that, DeMelo and whole lot more.

I'd take this deal. Even if Johnson was much worse a 2nd rounder is decent, plus its not like Hainsey is a key piece on Ottawas blue line. However I'm not sure Melnyk would allow it.

You could definitely get more with the cap space. For example sign Kreider to a 2 year 10 million deal and then trade him at half retained. Same amount of money but you'd get a lot more than a 2nd

In that regard it makes sense for sure. I like Riikola and I think he needs the minutes as he will be better than Johnson moving forward. Johnson will definitely be worse on another team though as he has some kind of comfort playing on the same team as Crosby.
