Don't think it's a great idea for Toronto to sign a 4th liner to this kind of contract, but it's solid deal.

He's not a 4th liner tho. He's in his first season, has great underlying numbers and is producing at a rate that should see him stapled to the 3rd line next year, capable of playing 2nd in a pinch.

A very good contract which could turn into a steal if he continues to develop.

E: And he plays a lot of C too, which ups his value.

He also plays C, he has size (even though he doesn't always use it). He can skate, he can play on the PK, he has offensive upside, although he has slowed down a little bit. He is also young, and under team control after this contract. Pretty tough not to like this deal. It is expensive for the Leafs if he plays 4th line minutes, but he will likely be in our top nine for those two years.

I realize that, but paying 4th liners this kind of money adds up when you have to sign a defensive core for next year.

10 Million Dollars left to sign 4 or 5 defensemen next year.

I voted yes because it's a solid deal, but I think the money would be better off going to the defense.

That's fair enough, Leafs D Core for next year is looking like:

Reilly
Holl
Sandin
Dermott
Liljegren
X

Leafs need solid RHD, and one of Johnsson, Kerfoot or Kap will be on the way out either in the next few weeks, or in the Summer. Doing so will not only swap a bit of cap (~3.2-3.5 out for ~5-6 in - depending on who the leafs get), but it will also give Engvall a spot in the top nine, and get McHeyev into it when he is healthy again.

It would be great to sign Muzzin but his age and the term / $$$ he wants likely prices himself out of TO. Plus, with Reilly, Sandin and Dermott (also plays RD) all playing LD, we have a much larger need at RD

We'll see what happens I guess

These are the signing the Leafs need to do. And by need, I mean "no other choice but to".

Identify role players who can play and sign them to cheap multi-year deals.

What are you talking about? Why do Leafs need to sign 4 or 5 defensemen? They need to sign 2, maybe 3.

Don't think that defense gets Toronto into the playoffs though. Toronto's current defense - Muzzin + Barrie is one of the worst in the league. Don't think Toronto can afford to let Muzzin walk

If you haven't watched the Leafs you haven't seen this kid come in like a vet and at really help turn the Leafs season around.

Don't see Liljegren making the team next year. He's looked pretty bad this season.

Rielly = First Pair
Sandin = Second Pair
Dermott = Third Pair
Holl = Third Pair

Maybe Liljegren makes the team, but I haven't seen enough for me to risk not signing a defensemen in the offseason.

It actually does free up money. He will likely replace one of kerfoot or Johnsson freeing up over 2m.

Liljegren has looked bad this year? I definitely don't agree with that assessment. They are probably looking for him to play third pair minutes next year. He can do that right now and has looked fine to good depending on the game. For a rookie in his fourth game I don't think your assessment makes sense.

I think the Leafs making a trade for a defenceman is a given, the question is when and for whom.

Liljegren has looked really good with Sandin. Holl can play second pair. We just need a first line RHD preferably a defensive one.

A comment like this is evidence you haven't seen this guy play. Did you just look up the leaf's line combinations? He's had less of a role since Johnsson came back, which I think is a mistake, but anyone who's watched him knows he offers way more value than a 4th liner

Do you expect a 1.25M player to stand out every game?

No. But he doesn't do anything more than what you would expect a 4th liner to do.

Signing is OK...Cap situation is not.
As per CapF:
2020/21 TML have 14 players signed at about US$71.4M. Therefore, Dubas has to sign 9 more players with approximately US$12.1M (used US$83.5M as upper Cap next year).

Considering he's probably taking Kapanen, Kerfoot or Johnsson's spot when one of them gets moved for a defenseman, this is a good signing. He hasn't been quite as good as he was when he first came up, but he's still been an effective bottom-six guy that provides speed and helps jump start the transition game. Underrated playmaker who will absolutely outperform this contract.
