Most of the top line players are signed though

For sure, but that Cap-math leaves an avg of US$1.3M for each of the 9-guys.
To compare - Boston also has 14 signed/US$62.5M (that's an extra $10M to play with). Moreover, they also have the best players signed (other than Krug)

Engvall's a great bottom six guy. Pretty happy about this.

On an individual deal basis. I think it's fine. On a team basis...Holl, Campbell, Engvall...TOR needs ELCs to be inserted into the mix. Not exactly, the $2M, $1.6M, $1.3M that's been happening. Again, none of those on a deal by deal basis are bad, but none of those guys mentioned are truly difference makers. There's roughly $10-$12M in cap space next year for 5-6 players which doesn't allow for any big pickups.

This contract is another contract where Dubas/Leafs don't care about % of Cap Hit. Do the math and remember u have to use 81.5.

Signing is OK...Cap situation is not.
As per CapF:
2020/21 TML have 14 players signed at about US$71.4M. Therefore, Dubas has to sign 9 more players with approximately US$12.1M (used US$83.5M as upper Cap next year).

I think your math is off somewhere. CapFriendly identifies 9 forwards (Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Kerfoot, Johnsson, Kapanen, Hyman and Engvall) totallng $54.1MM, 4 defensemen (Rielly, Holl, Sandin, Liljegren) totaling roughly $8.75MM, and two goalies totaling $6.65MM, for an aggregate of $69.5MM. Assuming only a $1MM cap rise, that leaves $13MM for 8 players, including 5 bottom-6 forwards. That doesn't look like a serious problem to me, especially if 3 or 4 forwards can be brought in at less than one million each.

This will look like a great deal assuming he can fit on the 3rd line (very good chance) once they move another pricier forward out for a dman.

With zero cap space for the 2020/2021 season. This news just in. The Pylons that are used in practice will be the new defense for the Maple Leafs. Costs against the cap is about 30 CDN dollars.... lol

Don't see Liljegren making the team next year. He's looked pretty bad this season.

Rielly = First Pair
Sandin = Second Pair
Dermott = Third Pair
Holl = Third Pair

Maybe Liljegren makes the team, but I haven't seen enough for me to risk not signing a defensemen in the offseason.

Liljegren has looked great so far.

Don't think it's a great idea for Toronto to sign a 4th liner to this kind of contract, but it's solid deal.

Its really funny how much you think you know about the Leafs players.

He's not a 4th liner tho. He's in his first season, has great underlying numbers and is producing at a rate that should see him stapled to the 3rd line next year, capable of playing 2nd in a pinch.

A very good contract which could turn into a steal if he continues to develop.

E: And he plays a lot of C too, which ups his value.

I agree. Also, this contract provides some small level of cap certainly for next year, especially considering the inevitable roster turnover we should expect. One less question mark heading into free agency.

Problem is that if Pietrangelo becomes UFA there's gonna be big time temptation to swing for the fences. There's probably gonna be another summer of major turnover in their roster, and they do have movable assets in guys like Kerfoot, Johnson, and Kap. Engvall could replace any one of those three Forwards, at about 1/3 of the cap hit. It's gonna be tricky.

I voted yes because it's a solid deal, but I think the money would be better off going to the defense.

Dubas will def. look to add a top 4 D, or at least extend Muzzin. They'll def need to move a Forward or two. The money will have to come from Kap, Kerfoot, or Johnsson. No other way to bolster their D.

You're not wrong, but the better option is defintely moving Kapanen or Johnsson, promoting Engvall, and using the cap space you then save on D.

Its a very good deal, would love to see something similar for Mikheyev (maybe a little higher AAV, 2 years @ 2.25m?)
This is honestly how I would rate leafs forwards in terms of value to the team:
Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander (closing the gap on Tavares quickly), Hyman, Mikheyev, Kapanen, Engvall, Kerfoot, Johnsson, the rest....
Looks more and more like either Johnsson or Kerfoot will be odd man out this offseason.

I guess that's what happens when you don't have a bias for the player. You see him for what he is.

Maybe if he was wearing a Habs uniform, he'd be a passable player by him.

No, I'd want him to be down in Laval to get better.

I used the CapF total and it doesn't match the individual position dollar amounts you quote above. Too many numbers, angles and time-wasted to debate for fun.
You see rainbows and I see storm clouds - it happens. No lip service from either side is likely going to change the differing viewpoint, cheers.

I realize that, but paying 4th liners this kind of money adds up when you have to sign a defensive core for next year.

10 Million Dollars left to sign 4 or 5 defensemen next year.

Either you hate the Leafs are really don't understand the Leafs with you multiple non factual comments. If even if there is this undocumented numbering system, is Engvall fourth C? Geez Canadian have 3.2m Alzner in Laval. Leafs have signed season on defence....Reilly, Holl, Sandin, Liljegren, Marincin...Dermot is a RFA that's six. Add two more. 10m for Dermot and two others, without even making a trade...lots of cap.

You quoted HabForEver. He's a anti Leaf troll. Also many just can't do math. Leafs cap is fine next year. He says the Leafs can't manage their cap and the Habs have 4.6m Alzner and 2.3m Weiss in Laval.

That's Boston. who probably are best cap managed team....except for Backes. There are teams in a far worse situation than the Leafs .

You can't even figure out the Leaf roster for this year, you certainly aren't clairvoyant to know the Leafs roster for not year. Fact is with RFA Dermot will be signed the Leafs so that is six NHLers under contract. I expect (my clairfvoyance) to think the Leafs are going to add two competent D Men next summer. Yep for cap reasons, a forward such as Johnsson or Kapanen will have to be traded. Not much different than most teams in the off season, trade from strength to fill weaker positions.
