Created by: GMs
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 12, 2020
Published: Feb. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If you dont know what's going on with Weber and you dont know the cap recapture, don't comment please. For the ones who knows, let's say Weber's career is really over and he wants to retire. Cap recapture to NSH : 4,095,238$ for the next 6 years... NSH trade for Weber so they can place him on LTIR and do not suffer the cap recapture. MTL won't do a favor to them tho

I’m super curious to see how this all unfolds, not sure why Weber would want to flat out retire and walk away from all that money. Especially if it’s an injury that’s holding him back, he could just go on LTIR anyways. I think he still has a little vendetta for NSH trading him and would only go on LTIR if it’s in NSH. I don’t think they’d have to give up that much but they’d definitely have to give something up, I think that the first alone would be more than enough. I do get that MTL is doing NSH a huge favour, but a higher end prospect and a 1st in a stacked draft is unrealistic, maybe a B- or C prospect and the 1st.

MTL doesn't want the cap themselves... NSH just needs to get another team involved and pull a SJS-Hoffmann and pay the middleman a little bonus. If Weber's career is done, really should be looking at the approx value of a 2nd and a B prospect (nsh equivalent of Pitlick)

Weber's contract was front loaded, he's getting 6M 6M 3M 1M 1M 1M … maybe not next year but after the 2 6M seasons, leaving 6M on the table when you already received 104M lol

what are you talking about, MTL can't have Weber's caphit, if he doesn't want to retire he's going on MTL LTIR

So you think MTL will eat Webers contract, with the cap hit of almost $8 mil for 6 more years, just to avoid doing NSH a "favor"? It's not Weber's choice to go on LTIR or not, he has no say in the matter. People are reading way to into this. He'll go on LTIR in MTL and that'll be it.

The one thing I want to know is, when a player is on LTIR is there a minimum amount of effort needed to prove that he is attempting to make a rehab so that the insurance pays his salary?

Because I'm pretty sure a player (Other than with concussions because they are impossible to perfectly diagnose) cannot just make no effort to get better for the insurance companies to pay out the salary regardless. They must want to see some proof that the player is attempting to get better right? So that they don't have to pay the salary anymore.

So If Weber just needs to stay on LTIR and go on vacation for the rest of his career and get paid to do it, then the answer is pretty simple for him. BUT if he has to prove he trying to rehab his injury and make actual efforts, then maybe he'll consider retiring as it will release him from his obligations and he can just live normally. Its not like he needs those 18M after this year that badly. He's already earned 92M from this contract!!

I am curious to see what comes from that.

Players just can't go on LTIR. Now admitting a good chance not medically fit....which is the reason for "retiring". Montreal wouldn't absorb much of Weber cap hit if he retired, it would be Nashville, due to severe front loading of the contract when he was a Pred.

Teams are not "cap punished" for a player retiring (although that rarely happens), if the contract pays the same salary in that contract during the life of the contract. Teams are cap punished when a player retires early from fulfilling the contract and the contract was front loaded.

I said if you dont have a clue about is contract, dont comment. If they are not getting Weber and Weber retires, 4.095M is going on Nashville salary cap for the next 6 years.

Also it seems stupid for Weber to not go on LTIR and forfeit the remainder of his salary just to stick it NSH. People are reading way to into this. He'll go on LTIR in MTL and that'll be it.

Tomasino and a 1st is way too much. There will be some back and forth because if Shea retires MTL gets nothing, but NSH gets screwed over with his cap hit.
More likely trade is a mid-range pick with a mid-range draft pick.

You don't get it. It's not Weber's choice to be put on LTIR or not, that choice belongs to MTL. MTL doesn't want the cap hit for an injured player so they would place him on LTIR if he is injured. I imagine Weber could file a grievance claiming to be healthy enough to play, but even then, it's MTL problem, not NSH. The only reason for Weber to retire is if he wanted to be immature and stick NSH with the cap hit. There is zero benefit to Weber to just retire.

I know the contract was heavily frontloaded but still why would you walk away from the extra 6m when you could go on LTIR if the injury is what’s making him retire? There’s literally 0 reason for him to not just go on LTIR.

What’s really interesting is if Weber wants that extra 12m the next 2 years but doesn’t care about the remaining 6, he goes on LTIR till after that 12m is paid out. He could then decide to retire fully and NSH would be stuck with what? 6.2m per year for the next 4 years after the 2021-22 season. I see that scenario being more realistic than this one, or even him waiting till the 15m is paid out then retiring with the 3 years left on his deal making it 8.2m a year for the next 3 years after the 2022-23 season.

If he doesn't want to retire then NSH doesn't make the move in the first place. If he does retire, MTL won't be jerks and scam the Preds trading back for that contract. If they are jerks... they still won't want to pay someone 7M on ltir, so they would likely move him elsewhere. That middleman wouldn't be cruel and would thus trade Weber to NSH for perhaps a small bonus.

1.Is he deemed to play?
Yes: He plays for MTL
No: He goes on LTIR with MTL

2. Does Weber wants to retire?
No: Get paid 80% by insurance, 20% by the club. MTL get ltir relief. (MOST LIKELY)
Yes: Bergy make a call to NSH and make a deal.

Based on the Marleau deal, the return would be way more than a first, but Bergy might go easy on his collegue.

Truth be told, Nashville is just on borrowed time, there is no way Weber plays out the last 3 years of his contract for 1M apiece... The hurt will come, no question about that; the only question left to be asked is how painful will it be for Nashville?

Marleau 1 year 6.25M = 1st round pick
6 years 4.1M = 1st + A prospect
