I hope this happens but it will be sad to see Lundqvist go. I don't think he will want to be the no#3 goalie.

I'll bet good money that by year 4 and likely by year 3 of his next contract, whoever signs Kreider will hate the contract.

Same with Hall.

I doubt either are better than 75% the players they are now by year 4.

Agree but the NHL is all about the present moment. Hence why so many contracts have glaring AAV or term. This is going to be the norm from now on with random but rare bargain signings.

Yeah but the thing is wingers don't age as well as defenseman and centres.

How do the signings of 5-7 million dollar wingers look over the last word years?

Erikson, Lucic, Backes, Ladd, Okposo were all signed within about 2 years for similar money and term at similar ages. Don't do it!

That’s what I mean, they’re signed for their present and recent past value, not their future value usually,

I don't see any reason for the Rangers to make the last three trades you propose. Why would the Rangers give up Andersson, Reunanen, and a 3rd round pick for Puljujarvi? Would rather keep Andersson than trade him for Puljujarvi, I'm sure Andersson will come around to wanting to stay in NY. Adding a 3rd round pick and a prospect with Andersson for Puljujarvi is a ridiculous overpayment.

Yeah but look at those examples. They were all terrible signings by like the second or third year of 5-6 year contracts. Don't sign UFA wingers to big contracts. You'll probably regret it

If Gorton gives CK 7 years, he’s a fool. 6 years max rather 5 years at a little bit higher AAV. 5 years $7M AAV, 6 years $6.75M AAV max.

Agree - that's a huge over pay by term and AAV. His comps make much less:

Tatar: 4 x $5.3M (7.07%)
Nyqvist: 4 x $5.5M (6.75%)
Johansson: 2 x $4.5M (5.52%)
Zuccarello: 5 x $6M (7.36%)

He's better than Johansson. He's younger than Zuccs. I'm pretty sure Tatar was an RFA.

They aren't perfect comparables, but nobody ever is. Who would you suggest?

I suspect he can get something in the range of 6-7 mil for 5-7 years.

And it will be a ****ty contract

Okposo: 0.88 P/GP prior three seasons
Ladd: 0.68 P/GP prior three seasons, 23, 24, 25 goals
Eriksson: 0.66 P/GP prior three seasons, coming off a 30-goal campaign
Backes: 0.69 P/GP prior three seasons, 27, 26, 21 goals, right-shot center (huge difference in value right there)
Oshie: 0.74 P/GP prior three seasons, coming off a 33-goal campaign and 2 playoff runs at 0.88 P/GP
Kreider: 0.67 P/GP prior three seasons, could hit 30 goals this season, no playoffs for 3 years

Contracts:

Okposo: 8.22%
Ladd: 7.53%
Eriksson: 8.22%
Backes: 8.22%
Oshie: 7.67%

8.22% of $83M is $6.8M - exactly the contract in the mock above. And I agree - whoever signs that deal will live to regret it - and sooner rather than later.

So he will likely be a little lower, maybe 6 million. He's a little younger than some of them IIRC and has the "intangible" of toughness along with Oshie, Backes, and Ladd from that list.

I think if you add his GPG he looks pretty good in comparison too.

Its going to likely be a ****ty contract. So will Hall's

In all honesty whatever Kreider is signed for would likely be a good contract for Hall and Kreider should get like Johanssons deal.

But UFA is usually a recipe for terrible contracts.

I have noticed that most speed players age well. Mike Gartner, had 8 great seasons after age 30, MArtin St. Louis had several great seasons after age 30. Kreider is a fitness guru who will have his best seasons in the next 5 years. Marchand's best season was at age 30 and he might beat that this year. There are plenty of wingers who played well in their 30s The only season he might not hit 25 goals I think will be his last year of the contract. I guess he will hit his peak at 32.
