Description
With Weber out and Petry likely being traded, the habs need a RHD to fill in currently with Fluery and Brook still developing. Is this trade something that MTL may be interested in right now and is the value fair?

Why is Petry "likely to be traded"?
I was all up on that a few weeks ago but I've since changed my mind again.

Canucks have no interest in Weise and no interest in trading Stecher.

Yeah, same.

Until Montreal goes full re-build, or Fleury, Brook or "Other" pushes him out, I don't see a trade happening. At least not with a younger replacement coming in. IF Montreal trades Petry and Weber is out long term, I would sooner call Alzner up and play him as our 1RD *vomits* than trade for a non top 4RD.

The reason Petry COULD (and maybe should) be traded is that next summer, he will be in a position to demand a long-term contract, loaded with NMCs, that will carry him well into his mid-, even late-30s. Are the Habs likely to want to be among those bidding? Probably not. What has been shown by this year's collapse is that the Habs are not close and the "next wave" of kids won't soon push the Weber-Price-Petry gang over the goalline. While Weber and Price might be worth keeping around for stability and leadership, if you can trade a 31-year-old Petry for a promising 22-year-old and a good draft pick, it should be a no-brainer for Marc Bergevin.

Of course. But they said "likely" not "could" or even "should". As long as Bergevin is in charge, I expect any important role players on the team will be lost to UFA for nothing. He doesn't sell, he never has and never will (according to his quotes lately). I don't expect him to be traded this year, and a slightly better chance next year, but still unlikely.
