Description
Here is a few trade deadline options I would like the see the Leafs go for. I am not saying they make them all, or even any, but just some intriguing names leading up to the deadline, who I would prefer over the other names out there like Dumba and Manson.

Mikeal Granlund is a defencively responible forward who we can use to upgrade at 3C. Given it is an expiring contract rental option, I think the trade makes sense for Nashville and Leafs can throw in a conditional pick if he re-signs and performs.

I think Jeff Petry and Jonas Brodin are the best defense options on the trade bait list. If Morgan Rielly is out until the playoffs then Brodin could be the perfect fit to replace him until then. He is one of the best defensive defencemen in the league which is something the leafs should target. A left side of Brodin, Muzzin and Sandin would be really good until Rielly gets back.

Brodin has another year on his contract and he could be insurance for next season if Muzzin prices himself out of Toronto. I am not sure if he can switch to the Right side when Rielly returns, but it is good to have extra insurance for the playoffs. (if they make it)

I don't like the Granlund trade. Giving up a player with 3 years of control for a pending UFA doesn't make a lot of sense, and the upgrade is marginal.

Acquiring Brodin probably means Muzzin doesn't come back. I'm okay with that, but that's probably what you're looking at. Moving over to the right side is not as easy as it sounds, some guys don't do the transition well. Muzzin tried it last year and it was a disaster. But it probably gives you room to chase a reasonably priced UFA RHD.

Leafs can't trade the 2021 1st because of the conditions on their trade with Carolina. I don't know they are a fit to trade with Montreal, especially a player with so much control like Kapanen. Arizona for somebody like Hjalmarsson might be a good option (so would have Demers before he got injured).

Those trades are really bad for the Leafs now and especially for the future.
Leafs get three regulars this year but trade four regulars, Timashov makes five. Certainly Granlund ain't that special. Much weaker on the wings and centre. Plus losing the long term NHL control with the cost efficient Kapanen, Dermot and Kerfoot. And losing a first and seconder rounder too.

I don't see the logic in revamping most of your roster in the midst of a playoff race. There simply isn't any time to try to build chemistry with this many new "key" players. On a side note, I don't think any of these trades make any particular sense anyway.

Johnsson is much more valuable than a UFA Granlund (who has 22 points in 50 games).

Kapanen is more valuable than 32 year old Petry (but why not throw away a 1st + Bracco too?).

You're basically giving away Muzzin + Dermott + Kerfoot + Timashov + 2nd for eighteen months of Brodin.
