As a DAL fan I'd decline this as it pretty much forces us to protect 4 D-men (Heiskanen, Klingberg, Lindell and Burns) in the expansion draft.

We could also leave Burns unprotected, but the risk of him being taken and us getting nothing left would be too high. Especially if he keeps performing on a good level.

Avs would probably only be able to take on Thorton with how their contract situation is on with the NHL roster and probably would have to look at Nieto being part of the deal just to make it work.

Avs just cant absorb NHL contracts without other moves, cant see them doing multiple just to fit in those guys. With how sakic does thing, I would think he would only be talking the sharks about Labanc and looking at packing up Jost to get him. Dont see him picking up multiple rentals

Colorado has $30 million in cap space at the TDL, they only have 46 contracts, and there are no roster limits after the trade deadline. No reason they couldn't make this deal

But if this trade was made at the deadline there would be no need, since you have have as many players as you want as long as you remain cap compliant

I didnt think it was like that, thought it only expanded to a 25 man roster after the deadline is done.
When does it expand?

It's an unlimited number of players. It kicks in on trade deadline day, so February 24 this season.

Teams have to remain cap compliant by the end of the year. What you see sometimes is a team goes over the cap on a daily basis after the deadline, but because they've banked enough space, they remain cap compliant by the end of the year. E.g. the Jets last year https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/jets/cap-tracker/chart/2019

ok that would make more sense then. If thats the case yes Avs could snipe up that trade...stilll dont see the reason why they would do both, Thornton would be the only guy that makes sense

thanks for the clarity
