The forwards you traded were rentals. The reason why Coleman got so much is because he's on a criminal contract and is on pace for 30 goals. I think your best bet to get a 1st rounder is Pageau but a late 1st round pick is probably the most overvalued asset in hockey

Good try Arafay, but don't chug the Kool-aid!
* Backes is not worth a Kings Ransom ^ ^ ^ (thankfully Sweeney went to Harvard and not Carleton) Cheers!

He will take more than Toronto had to give up for marleau. Unless you take a dump back

I'm not a cap-ol-ogist, so please do a search on CF above ^ ^ under countless posts regarding Backes vs Marleau...
FYI - they are not the same and a brief snapshot:
* Marleau was 35+ years old when he signed in TO thus no cap relief (Backes was signed at 32 so he has relief).
* Marleau had more term (Backes has one year)
* Marleau had one destination (Backes has submitted a LIST and I assume list means plural or 2 or more teams) and
* Yadda, Yaddda, Yadda

Holland would not make that trade. Not enough talent coming back from Ottawa. Besides he can't add three contracts, without send some away in the same deal.

If backes gets bought out the team buying him out only gets 2M in cap relief and the additional 2M added to their cap hit the next season. While since marleau was a 35+ contract he would only fall into one season with his full cap hit. One reason why dumping backes will cost more.

You also mentioned his term. They both have 1 year left if this trade occurs in summer. Marleau was supposed to be a UFA anyway this season so that’s just factually incorrect. There’s another reason why backes will cost more to dump than marleau.

Marleau was prepared to go anywhere as long as he was bought out. Backes’ m-ntc on the other hand will make finding a partner even more difficult driving the price up further.

In conclusion, all the points you listed really only contribute to dumping backes costing more than dumping marleau.

It’s a wonder what “a search on cf” will do.

Say what you want brother_ BCarlo/On3Man3 and the rest of the Boston Mafia have yakked about this 100 times over and they will fight to the horrible death on this that you're wrong.
If you are a team w/ lots of Cap like OTT (to which Backes would not go to anyway) or NJ, COL, CBJ etc. then there's no need to buy him out. Just let him be a pressbox guy munching corndogs and getting you to the CAP-floor or put him on Robidas Island...problem solved!

AND btw Backes submitted his trade list to Sweeney this past week...

Beyond all that bs...the trade you show ME and MY Armchair GM office is a big overpay and I DECLINE. I'll keep Backes another year thanks (and my picks) and walk up the street to a GM that wants to see a win-win situation.

Adios...

The Oilers are probably another couple of drafts away from building up a decent pool of forward prospects; other than Lavoie and Denezhkin they really don't appear to have any young offensive promise coming up. This year's 1st round pick, and perhaps even the 2nd round pick, is extremely valuable to Holland and it seems unlikely he will part with it unless he can acquire young, NHL proven (or ready) high-end offensive talent in return.

I'm sure Holland would like to move Kris Russell, but I he'll also want to maximize the return he gets for Puljujarvi and packaging the two isn't going to help that effort. There's also the matter of Russell's limited no-trade-clause, one suspects the player may veto a move to a rebuilding club.
