Selling at TDL

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 17, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Basing my trade value off the Zucker, Greene and Coleman deals. This is definitely a sellers’ market. People that are fans of teams that are buyers might not like the cost to acquire rentals and impact players, but this is the harsh reality that we are in. Zucker, a player with two years left on his deal who is on pace to score his second 50+ point season in his career (Career high: 64 pts / On pace for: 54 points)., cost the Pens a first AND a B prospect. Coleman, a very useful 3rd line shutdown forward with a cheap cap hit and two years left on his deal, cost Tampa a first and a B prospect as well. Greene, a rental defensive 3rd pairing D, cost the Isles a second. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that Tatar will fetch more than Zucker and Coleman since he is on pace to score over 70 points and he has a better contract than Zucker. One can also conclude that Armia is arguably as good as Colaman while carrying a similar cap hit and being on pace to score a bit more points than the latter. Since an old player on an expiring deal fetched a second on this market, it is easy to assume that Kovalchuk would fetch more than a second (since he is clearly better than Greene in terms of production and impact) and that Thompson would fetch approximately a third, since he probably has slightly less value to a contender than Greene would. Therefore, Montreal could truly end up with a big haul after this deadline if they sell, especially if they deal Petry (their most valuable D in terms of trade value).
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Bouchard, Evan
  2. Manning, Brandon
  3. 2020 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Tatar is better than Zucker and Coleman, so there is no reason he would fetch a smaller return. The gap in value between Foote/Addison and Bouchard makes up the missing value. Reaves is simply in the deal for cap space. To make the deal more enticing for Edmonton, a team with cap trouble, Tatar’s salary would be retained. Manning is in the deal for cap reasons.
EDM
  1. Tatar, Tomas ($2,400,000 retained)
  2. Thompson, Nate
2.
MTL
  1. Dorofeyev, Pavel [Reserve List]
  2. Eakin, Cody
  3. Hague, Nicolas
  4. Reaves, Ryan
  5. 2020 1st round pick (VGK)
  6. 2021 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Vegas has been needing a number one D since they came into the league. Petry would fill in that hole perfectly. He wouldn’t come cheap, but he alongside Armia (only at a combined 5.35M cap hit) would definitely help them reach the next step. Of course, they wouldn’t come cheap since they aren’t rentals, but they can stay with the team long term if re-signed.

The thing about the Zucker comparison is that a lot of the value came from the term. He has an extra 2 years compared to Tatar, which while it still looks nice, im not convinced they give up their best D prospect and a 1st, because :
I think a team in any other division would be willing to do that package, but the problem is the Pacific. The pacific division is so weak/shaky, its hard for teams to know whether they are truly contenders or not. Even with Tatar, I dont see them making it past the blues, Pens, or Caps. Which is why I dont think they give up Bouchard. Now, you go and talk about a team like St Louis or Boston or even Carolina with Dougie out, I think theres a good chance you would get a really solid return. Maybe its the other way around, the pacific is so weak EDM would be willing to give up Bouchard to solidify themselves as the clear best in the division, but thats just how I look at it. And then the same goes with VGK but I think thats different because the most valuable asset to them is their first since they are getting Petry back

the Habs bias is real. Zucker and Tatar have similar trade values. if habs land a first + good prospect thats a good trade for them. Absolutely zero chance Kovy fetches that much
