The Ideal Fit

Created by: krakowitz

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 17, 2020

Description
Palmieri is a top line caliber winger who is the perfect fit for Boston's 2RW, and not a pure rental. Having New Jersey retain on him pays serious dividends for them next offseason to improve their roster. While ideally they won't give up Urho, he'll be necessary to be moved in order for them to get Palmieri and significantly improve their chances at a Cup run. He'll help out their power play and significantly improve their 5v5 offense past the first line.

I'm not a Boston fan so I don't know the lines exactly, but this is what looks right from an outsider if Palmieri is added.

Take out the retention and you're pretty close on value

I won't give up Vaakanainen. I don't know why some people move him. He'll play top pair D after Chara's departure

I understand not wanting to move him, but I really think this is a worth while move. With Toffoli having just been traded, there really aren't a lot of 2RW options available, and I don't think anyone would be stunned to see Boston win a Cup with this lineup. You have to give to get, and I think Boston would be wise to just take advantage of the window that's open in front of them.

Still, not Vaakanainen. Move another D prospect but not him.

There really aren't any other D prospects that would entice NJ in my opinion. I don't think Zboril has much of a future if any, Andersson has very limited upside, etc. I think it has to be Urho for it to work, and I think Boston would pull the trigger. They were so close last year, and the impact that Palmieri can have is incredible. That top six is just as dangerous as Tampa's, but they have the grit that Tampa doesn't. But I totally get why Boston fans are opposed to moving him.

They didn’t move him for stone last year (might be mixing up Vaak for Studnicka), but if I remember correctly from last deadline, I doubt they move him for Palmieri. A guy like Lauzon could be available maybe? He’s had a rather good showing the past couple weeks playing his off side. Sweeney is stingy when it comes to trades. The Nash deal I think was pushed by upper management because they overachieved that season and wanted to go for it. I could see Don Sweeney standing pat but I don’t think they’ll be linked to any of the big fish, and if they are they’ll get out bid quick. Jesper Fast is a guy I could see the bruins going after. Won’t cost a whole lot, gives them depth on the right side. They should’ve pulled trig on the Toffoli trade when they were rumored to have a deal in place. Just my opinion on what I think the Bs approach is this deadline

Pull trade call, keep Vaak and throw Studnicka in the #2 RW hole (or Coyle to #2RW and JStud in #3RW). Throw him "right to the wolves" so to speak.
May be just as good an option going forward as paying inflated prices set by desperate GMs like TBL, VAN, NJ etc. etc. Furthermore, Krug, DeBrusk, Grizz need new deals so Palmeri's hit $$ (even retained) may be a bit much without a correlating a Backes move too..........
