Can you give me some insight as to why? I'm not asking out of pure curiosity. Tomas Tatar is on pace for around 70 points and has another year left on his deal after this one. Maybe I'm undervaluing Blais but I figured he's a top 9 guy with some bite, 1st round picks will be dealt and top prospects in most deals (even for rentals) it's been well proven to this point that it's a sellers market. Maybe the Blues don't need a forward?

1- The fact that Tatar has another year left, as nice as his cap hit may be, makes him a bad candidate for us to pick up because our first offseason priority is to re-up Petro. Grabbing Tatar just makes it $4.8M harder for us to keep our captain. We're not adding any significant cap hit until he's re-signed.

2- Beyond that, we are not trading the 2020 1st and we're not trading Hofer. And yeah, you're probably also underestimating Blais' value a bit. He has offensive upside.

3- It's always worth mentioning that Tatar is a) not a player Berube would want for his system/preferred manner of play & b) not a very good playoff performer. His speed and 5v5 skill are very nice, but he's small and doesn't grind. And while he is on a 70-point pace this season (at age 29, mind you), that's not his typical level. This will be his first season over 58 points, and just two years ago he managed only 34.

4- Finally, yes, we don't really need a forward. Tarasenko will be back, and we filled our primary need for this Cup defense run by grabbing Scandella today.

Wheeler has this to say about Romanov:

I have watched Romanov a lot this year to try to come to terms with the gap between my evaluation and projection of his game and that of most others in the scouting world. I’ve never thought particularly highly of him. Don’t get me wrong. he’s a very good prospect who has dominated his peers in spurts... but some believe he’s in the conversation as the top D prospect in hockey right now and I just can’t bring myself to agree. Romanov defends at a high-level and always seems to recognize where he is in relation to the puck and the opposing team’s players, quickly identifying how to manage the situation and make the right play. He’s also smart with the puck, moving it quickly and efficiently to advance the play up ice. But I wouldn’t say he’s particularly dynamic, I don’t think he makes a ton of plays from the offensive zone blue line in (though he’s a better passer than he is a shooter), I don’t see power-play upside (maybe PP2) and he’s 5-foot-11. He looks like the kind of player who can chip in on special teams here and there while playing a regular shift at 5-on-5 as a low-event defender at both ends. I don’t see the star power some do.


This about Brook:

After a dominant final season in junior where he led all WHL defensemen in scoring, Brook’s first full season at the pro level has traveled an up-and-down trajectory. I’ve seen him play shifts where he’s using his plus-level skating to carry the puck through three zones and make a play, or snuff our a series of rushes back the other way with stick on puck and a tight gap. I’ve also seen shifts where he gets lost in his own zone, he doesn’t keep his feet moving, his head isn’t on a swivel and he gets burned. In the offensive half, I’ve also seen too much hesitation. What allowed Brook to breakout in the WHL last year was his willingness to attack off the line and try to make plays. This year, he has played a more passive game. That’s not a huge concern but it’s noteworthy. I still like Brook’s NHL upside and I think some heavy coaching could help him come to terms with the way he is best suited to play with and without the puck, but he needs to use his skating to his advantage more consistently, make smarter decisions with the puck and just generally play with a little more pace and intention. If he can, the skill set is there for a second or third pairing, with the added benefit of being a right shot in a pool — and sport — that is short on them.

And this about Samorukov:

Samorukov, like McLeod, has shown well in my viewings and put together a quietly good rookie season in the AHL this year. There are always going to be questions about his offensive upside and his ability to create goals without his shot (which is powerful) but his stalwart defensive play, which made him one of the OHL’s better players, has translated effectively to the pro level. He plays hard and uses his 6-foot-3 frame to lead with his stick, gap tightly and finish with his body when necessary but not just because. He’s also a smart, calculated distributor of the puck, regularly making little plays that advance the puck up ice, even if they don’t directly contribute to goals. He’s a relied upon 5-on-5 defender who can penalty kill and skates well for his size.

Two things: I don't think Romanov is one of the top-3 D prospects in hockey - not even close - and I'm also confident that Samorukov has similar ceiling to he and Brook while having a higher floor than Brook does. They're in the range. But feel free to continue drinking gallons of Habs Kool-Aid.
